Sump Pump UPS?

A lot of sump pump backup systems seem to require the installation of an additional pump. Does anyone just have a battery backup system hooked up to the existing sump pump? Seems dumb to add an additional pump. Is there anyone using a UPS type system with their existing sump pump? What options are out there?

I would consider the addition of a battery backup versus investing in a UPS first.

If the pump dies, the UPS won't help. At least with a secondary pump (battery backup). you're at least somewhat insured incase the power goes out or your main pump dies.

I put in a backup, battery operated pump and I'm planning on picking up a generator too... If you're going to invest in a UPS, consider a genreator that will do a whole heck of a lot more than a UPS for just a few bucks more. You're going to spend quite a bit for a UPS that can put out enough amps for a sump pump.

Are there residential generators that detect power loss and start in the event of loss?

Sure. But they're very expensive. Battery back up pumps are designed to detect power loss, however.

I have one of these in my basement. It conditions the battery and when power loss is detected, it sounds an alarm (not very loud) and will then run off the battery. it's a much better solution than a UPS, IMHO. Either solution is only good for a short term power outage. Hence where a gas generator will help in the 12 hour+ outage event.
