Spring has sprung

Garage door spring busted sometime after we got back from Easter dinner last night.

I'm going to call someone today to get it fixed, but what's involved and any ideas on cost?

Oh and it's amazing how heavy the doors are when you don't have the spring there to help out.

I think it's a couple hundred.

They put the new spring up and then tension it -- not terribly involved but the forces involved are pretty high. I always leave it to a professional.

i've replaced a spring before... it wasn't overly complicated... but i was only able to do it myself because the garage door is a double wide, and there is two springs on each side... one spring on one side broke so i was able to replace the spring with the old spring there to help me hold the tension...

the spring itself is cheap... just the labor involved...

Scrib,

Are the springs running up either side of the track? If so, it's an extremely easy fix. Take the old spring down and take it to Home Depot. the spring should have a color painted on it (probably at one end). Buy that color. Raise the door and put a C clamp on the track under the side of the door with the broken spring (to keep it from falling).

Make sure you put the safety wire back in the spring (look at the good one).

It's a 15 minute job Scrib. Don't pay someone to do it. Just look at the good spring to see how it goes up.

Don't think I have the same set up you're referring to... Two torsion springs at the top of the door. You can see where the one on the left gave way.

Everything I've read is these things are super dangerous.

get someone to replace that one, they can fuxor you up. We have them on our bay doors at work. I cut one and my boss ran back about 30 feet while i did it just in case, lucky me.

The smart thing with that is to have someone fix/replace it, your wife will thank us.

That's what I have and I won't risk fingers/hands/etc. for a couple hundred bucks.

Yeah that's the other type. I've done a few of them. It's not a big deal. If you feel at all uncomfortable, hire a pro.

Done.

$175 for two. Considering I ended up staying home today, figured get a pro out, fix and move on.
