So we bought a house...

and it's still under construction!

Hubby and I wrote our contract August 24th and our house is almost complete!!!!!!

Our final walk through is on the 8th of December and settlement is the 12th.
We're so excited and antsy to get in the new place.
What's great is that I work 2 minutes away so I visit the house often and try to always take pictures of the progress.

The house is being built by Ryan Homes. I was able to read up on a few threads about new home construction here so I was slightly prepared and someone on the forum actually built a Ryan Home a few years ago as well.
I was also able to talk to someone in the neighborhood that settled mid-summer and told me about construction and what to look out for.
The only stressful part of this whole process was locking in the mortgage and such which was done last week - THANK GOODNESS. Now all we do is play the waiting game......

Just some basics:
3 Floors [including finished basement]
4 bedrooms
4 full bathrooms
1 powder room
Approx ~ 4,050 sq ft.

I'm leaving the office now and will post pictures soon!

HUGE home for 23...congrats.

Seems like my parents generation got the bigger homes the older they got as the need for space increased...and nowadays younger people are starting with the huge homes right off the bat.

Congrats ...that is a massive home!

The wife and I just had a house built last year (2850 sqft ranch, 5bdrm, 3.5bth).
Partially finished basement. Our builder was McBride and Sons.
The process can be a little stressful, but we absolutely love the end result.

Good luck w/everything

That's the only way I can see myself doing it out here where I live. I'm aiming to move into a little shack and move up/upgrade over time.

First of all........HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!

I haven't changed the picture sizes yet, but I found the floorplan on the website.

Thank you to everyone for all the congrats and well wishes.

Thanks. I totally know what you're talking about how older people bought what they needed and such. Jon [hubby] and I talked it over and we were just going to buy a townhouse but we just thought - hell, we'll buy a big one and stay in there forever instead of moving another 3-5 times.

The home is a slight stretch for us but we're at the bottom of the corporate totem pole, so there's definitely room for growth!

No we're not in Alexandria. We're out in Chantilly. I work in that area now and I was out just driving around and checking out the area one day when I happened by the new community. At the time, I was looking for a home in the area but all of the prices were either the same or more for a home that is 15+ years old with a terrible floral color/print scheme and outdated appliances. Granted though, I gave up lot space to have a new home in the community, but it's ok for us - there's a park behind our house.

Haha! Don't remind me!!!!!
Jon and I decided that we're going to share the vacuuming. We have a dyson so we're going to store the dyson upstairs in the beginning and once a week I'll vacuum towards the downstairs and then the next week Jon will vacuum towards the upstairs.

I asked my cleaning ladies, that come to my condo right now, if they're willing to come to the new house once a month to work their magic. So far it seems as though they've agreed so I'm happy.

Btw....

I have the 4 bedroom/3 bath upstairs with the upgraded kitchen. My downstairs is very open with no closed off areas. I don't have the outlined optional storage and I don't have the door either. Jon has used that to make it his home theater area with surround sound, projector and A/V rack prewiring. He loves that area. Lol.

I'll try to get pics up after the big dinner and before the major shopping.

Ok so here are the pictures. Bare with me!

This is mid-september. Just started digging.

Foundation a week later.

Materials for the house. My foundation is the first one. The house that's coming up is 3 doors down.

My neighbor to my right is up. Working on mine now.

About two and a half walls are up.

The way my front door looks.

**Then I went on vacation and came back to this [columbus weekend]**

Stick built prob represents 90% of residential construction in the US. Cinder block is more commonly used for commercial buildings.

We would've loved stone but unfortunately we had to choose brick. We got a light colored brick called Ft. McHenry.

Yes, thanks. Tender....that would be me. Lol. I'm so very grateful. This would all be different and would give it back in a heartbeat to have some things be different....

Land is expensive. If i wanted a little more, then that'd be a premium altogether.

No real need for cinderblock construction in most of the USA.

Sounds like your new house is across the street from my office.

edit: Saw the pics... maybe not. My office is in Chantilly but I live in South Riding. Are you in the Ryan Homes section of South Riding? I'm in the Toll Brothers portion.

Yea, that's the reason why I ask. My family lives in Central FL, and all the houses my family has bought has been cinder-blk construction, but I didn't know it was only common in FL though.

Haha. If your office was across the street from mine then we'd probably work in the same company!

I'm across the street from my place.

No I'm not in South Riding....I'm 15 mins away from the Sheetz over there and 2 minutes away from the costco.

Exciting times.

Tip for you: go into the house after the electrical and plumbing and HVAC is all roughed in, and before the drywalling starts. Take photos of every single wall so you can see where pipes, wires, and ducts are run.

I did this with my house and never regretted it; it's a great reference to figure out what's where in the walls.
