Shower Glass

So as some may know I remodeled a condo a while back. I'm still putting the finishing touches on everything but was curious if anyone had experience with glass shower doors.

In both bathrooms I had a tub installed. I have curtains hanging now but I think having either a 3/4 length piece of glass or glass with a swinging door on it would look better. I'm not really into the sliding glass doors.

I was thinking of something like this:

http://www.decorplanet.com/product_p/shdr-aqua-tub.htm

Can anyone offer any other suggestions or speak from personal experience with use of a similar product?

The only memorable experience I have with swinging glass doors is in the La Quinta hotel in Chicago. I stayed in about a half dozen rooms there and every room had the same issue. Water leaked from the shower onto the bathroom floor. I could never figure out why, not that I cared much. I would just drop a towel on it.

My fiancee's mom's house has a tub with a frosted glass door. Doesnt leak but the shower seems really small to me. At the same time I'm 6'4 & 235lbs so most showers seem small to me LOL

We went from a framed setup to a frameless... but our tub and shower are separate. Let me see if I can find some pics...

Found them. Sorry for the crappy pics... they are like 4-5 years old! The old setup also had a fiberglass basin which is now tile... however, that part will likely not be relevant for you

No water leaking. The way it was installed the door is pretty close to the glass, so no water gets out. On the bottom we have a little, practically invisible plastic lip which clips to the door and keeps all water inside the shower...

OLD SETUP

NEW SETUP

I like that. Obviously the set up would be slightly different, but I just want a slab of glass instead of a sliding door.

How was it mounted on the tile? I tried to get some instructions from the link I posted but they were not loading correctly

I love that frameless look. I'd love to do that with my shower when I rip it out and retile it.

The only thing I'd caution you about on the 3/4 glass is the splash from the open quarter. I aim the shower head so it hits the lower corner (floor/back wall, back of tub) so that I can stand as far from the back wall as possible. I understand others point the thing basically straight down, but for others like I, it could cause and issue.

Subinf, water will leak under the door. Don't get it.

I always think tubs with glass surround or slidding door look weird and out of date (even if you consider it higher-end). Nice shower curtain ftw.

Stand-alone shower----nice with glass. Tub----not so much.

I'm not planning on having a sliding door or any metal frame. I'm not even sure I'll have a door at all. I like the look of a 3/4 glass piece.

Can't say I've ever seen a setup like you posted in the pic, but it doesn't look bad. Just might be a little concerned with water splashing out the quarter that doesn't have glass. Might get annoying after a while if nothing else.

Yeah. That is a concern. I'm probably going to get a mock up of something to see if it would even look right. Hard to visualize because it is one of those things that will look either really good or really bad - and then there is the whole water spillage issue.

Don't really have an opinion on the glass but one thing I highly recommend is http://www.diamonfusion.com/en/default.aspx

I never have to clean my shower. It is awesome. My buddy at work became a reseller and I was very impressed. I have also seen people do different designs. What they do is draw out the design with the diamon fusion and then when your shower heats up the parts with the diamon fussion do not steam up.

Never clean my shower and it never fogs up. Good stuff.

^ Interesting. There's a lot of reading on that site so I'll just ask you

Do you apply it yourself and how often? Is it easy to apply?

We use a squeegee in our shower and it's a pain the ass. I would love to coat it with something practical to make it require less maintenance...

Why not wax it? Seriously. I saw that suggestion on a bottle of Turtle Wax and thought: Huh. Obviously not the floor where you'll bust your ass, but the walls? Why not.

I would do it myself, but my shower is beyond words.

I only had it done once and I am on year 3. It is exactly the same as waxing it. I know on new glass it is easier but on existing doors you have to clean them really good. I will ask my buddy the exact steps.

I actually just got back from Prague and every hotel I stayed in (3) always had the 3/4 glass section that would swing out. I know yours may not swing however I found it a pain with the water splashing on the quarter end that's open. Also, I'm sure your tub is not 3-4 feet off the ground but when getting out you're usually towards the end where the tub is curved so it may cause for some accidents. Something to think about.

Junior, your shower/tub layout is the same as mine. I have a framed shower right now which I don't like. Just wondering, how much did it run you to get a frameless? Estimate is fine. TY.

My parents have a frameless glass setup like JB's and it does not leak. Separate shower.

I believe Kohler has some glass setups as well.

One day, hopefully sooner rather than later, we'd also like to renovate our master bath and have a nice glass door instead of the framed and frosted glass we have now. It looks very dated compared to the frameless glass.

^ - I'm starting to think that will be the easiest. I still think it is possible to make a piece of glass look good but I'm not sure it is worth the expense.

Unfortunately I cannot give you a number b/c we did not pay for it.

When the builder built our house they used the wrong grout color in our master bath. They then stained it, but after a bit it started to fade. They then came in, removed all grout, and re-grouted it. Each time we had a problem with the grout, and it took them three (3) times to get it right!! For the third time we basically told them they needed to do something for us... so we got them to tile the shower floor and upgrade our glass to frame-less as compensation for them staining it once and re-grouting it 3 times.

So other then tipping the tile guy who was there for 2 days, it didn't cost us anything. The only thing I remember is the builder saying something along the lines of the shower glass alone costing over $2k... but no idea if that was their cost, retail, if installation was additional, or if it was just a number they were throwing out. Didn't matter much to me since it was on their dime ...

Hmm... interesting. My only concern would be the grout. Not sure how well wax will apply to the grouted areas.

"Custom" frameless shower glass is really expensive.. I was going to say around $2k would be accurate for what you have... especially since yours is taller than ones I've seen in pictures.
