Should I get a pool table?
Should I get a pool table?
My new house has a "living room" right when you walk in to the left. I measured it to be around 12ftX15ft. A room dimension chart I got from a local store recommended:
7 foot table
52" cue length - 12'X15'
48" cue length - 11'6"X14'6"
8 foot table
48" cue length - 12'X15'6"
The left wall is a bay window, and there is no right wall (dining room). I've made 2 pictures showing the dimensions of what the room would like like with a 7" or 8" table. They are drawn to scale, so the numbers should be correct (1" = 20 pixels).
Should I go with a 8ft table or 7ft table? I'm leaning toward the 8 footer. Thanks

I think we spent about 3 grand on the pool table we bought....It was cool and our friends had one too..But, after about 6 months it became an expensive table to put toys on...Save your money unless you are a pro
I LOVE playing pool.. there just isn't many reasonable places around here to go and play. Whenever we go to a bar I always play. It was actually my fiancee's idea to get a table

Spend the money on an PS3, its more fun and takes up less space.

It's nice to play with friends....as a drinking game.

Had one in the house growing up (bought at a garage sale), and it was fun for the first little while. Eventually, the pool table became our computer desk (at one end), and a catch-all for knick-knacks at the other. Actually, it worked out quite well for the computer for many years, but we never really used it much for its intended purpose after the initial first few months to a year.
i say go for it. I've always wanted a table, or at least have one of my friend have one. I think between all my friends we have easily spent enough at pool halls to buy a table but I don't know anyone that has enough room for one.
Although if that is your only living room, you do have to give up A LOT of space for a pool table. I know at my house, the only rooms big enough for one would be the master bedroom, and the one livingroom, and I'm not willing to give up either......although the thought has cross my mind on more than one occasion.

Thanks for the advice.. I'm going to measure once I move in, but I'm looking to get an 8 ft table.
By living room I meant traditional living room. There will be a tv/family room with a couch and TV for entertainment purposes.

Most people I know put their pool tables in the basement.
Ok I don't know anyone who has one, but if I did, I would put in the basement. Assuming you have one of those fixed up basements, and not the kind that looks like it could double up as a dungeon.

shooting wth your cue up against the wall is no fun at all.

x 100
I would get the 8 footer. With that said, I think the room is too small for it. I have played way too much pool in my life and will 100% get a table when I get a house. I think you need at least 5 to 5.5 feet from any wall. That's a minimum.

A couple of friends who had tables at their houses- we played occasionally, but generally had to clear all kinds of stuff off the tables to play because stuff ended up being put on top all the time. Not worth $1K+, esp. to lose a room that can be a library, media room, den or something more than occasionally useful.

when u break and the cue ball flies off of the table it always goes left or right, not straight ahead...because u missed hitting head ball in the center. so i guess u wouldn't have to worry about breaking a window.
here's a fun tip...keep your elbow up on your swinging hand (for right handers this is your right elbow) and follow through for maximum power. the fun part is intentionally hitting the rack off center and hitting your friend in the nuts and even worse yet, the kneecap. i think when i hit my friend in the nuts it kinda hit his thigh instead so the kneecap was much worse

I loved playing pool to so yeah I got a full size table 8? and hardly play on it people dont usually come over my house so i guess thats the main reason I like to play for real so I hate to play againt my wife because she always thinks im making up rules. for instance we are playing 9 ball and i useed the 1 to combo the 9 into the pocket and she kept tellimg me I LOST
had to pull up rules on the internet to show her, by that time neither of us wanted to play...
I had a freind come over for pool once... ended up playing smash bros brawl the whole time.

l would go with the 8 foot. I did buy one for my first house and put it in the finished basement. It helped keep me home at least one night per weekend for years. I really enjoyed having the table and after a while my wife even thought it was a good idea.
We ended up selling it with the house after about six years. I would love to have one again but now have nowhere to put it. Just think before you buy. Awful expensive for a computer or junk table.

Ive had one for about 5 years. Used it for at least 2hrs every night for the first few months. Then the newness wore off and people stopped coming over to play. Its not much fun to play with yourself (unless your whiskers
)For the last year or so it has been use for maybe 30min, the rest of the time it was used to fold clothes or as a general catch all table.
I vote NO for a pool table, its better to convince a friend to get one
My table is now at my parents house and I have an open media room

And having a wife that played pool as well, it makes it a lot easier to be able to get one. There is not going to be any resistance.
What color felt should I get for my table? The table is going to have a mahogany finish. I'm leaning toward the Academy Blue or Steel Grey.

Felt Choices
Navy Blue

Academy Blue

Steel Grey

Camel

Khaki
