Recommendation for good box/window fan?

I currently have a window fan like this:

It used to work really well...at least it did in my 600 sq. ft. apartment in 2006. Lately there hasn't been much wind at night. It cools off outside, but it doesn't cool off much inside. I tried using the fan that I have, but I noticed ZERO difference this morning.

I think I need a better fan.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good box fan or window fan? Something I can prop in a window? My mom has a really nice fan that she puts in a window at night to draw outside air into the house, but it was like $250!! It works and works well, but there has to be something cheaper that moves air! Or, is that simply the price for a fan that'll move some air?

How can a fan not work?
How does wind have anything to do with a fan?
Is it pulling in the cool air from outside?

I have A/C, but when it's cooler outside than it is inside...makes more sense to bring that air in!

When it's windy, the house cools off over night due to the breeze/draft bringing in cool air from the outside. When it's not windy, the house doesn't cool off as much due to the lack of moving air.

The fan I have now doesn't seem to move any air. I left it in the window in my spare bedroom overnight (set to exhaust) and left the window in the hall bath and the window in my livingroom open. When I came out this morning the inside temperature was like 74, and it was 65 outside.

I leave all the windows open in the master bedroom, but I have to keep the door closed so the cat doesn't come in and bother me at night...the master bedroom has no problem cooling off, but the rest of the house can't benefit from that.

if you set the fan too exhaust and plan to pull air through the house from another room, you need to make sure that the fan is strong enough to pull it all the way to that room...

if there are too many openings and the fan has to drawn air from all windows through the house to your room, the air flow may not make it... its like building pressure...

i experience this when i have my whole house attic fan running and the more windows you open, the lighter the pressure in air flow..

The fan is definitely not big enough for the house.

I'm thinking something like this may be in order...

^^ again...why not just get a real whole house fan?

They work better, and won't take up your window.

The cheaper, temporary, alternative....

I bought a 20" box fan from Home Depot for $15. This morning I opened the window in my living room and put the fan in the window in my spare bedroom. It works like a charm! I didn't expect much since the fan was so cheap, so I was surprised when it worked. :-D

As some point in the future I'll look into installing a whole house fan, but for now this'll have to do. I want a usable back yard, nice front yard, new fences, and a nice coat of paint on the exterior of the house first.
