Possible solution for a room without a door?

Hey guys. I was wondering if any of you had suggestions for a room without a door. I'm trying to find a way to put some sort of pseudo door in there. Im hoping for something that'll provide me with privacy, not like a shower curtain or something like that. I was thinking like.. sliding doors? but they seem a bit pricey. Any other suggestions?

So, if the room has no door, how do you get into the room...?

Smart@$$ing comment from above aside, I would recommend a pocket door...that would probably allow you the best privacy and those can lock as well.

Are you looking for a permanent solution or is this a place you are renting while in college and you have a roommate (or multiple roommates) and you got stuck with the bedroom that has no door?

You could always get one of those crazy ass metal pin doors, the ones that show an impression when you push up on them. I forget what they are called, I'm sure you all have played with the normal sized ones atleast once before. I saw one for sale a while ago, but it was like 400 bucks.

Large mirror. Put said mirror on a slide so you can slide it over (much like a pocket door) and then step into the room. Slide mirror back when you are in and no one knows you are in there. If you are a perv, then make is a 1 way mirror...

If you are permitted to install hinges on the doorway, why not install a hollow core interior door? Measure the doorway and see if you can get a pre-fab door from Home Depot or chain store($50 or so), or salvage one from somewhere for even less $. You can use an interior bolt or latch if you don't want to install an actual door lock set.
You can always go to Oakland or SF's Chinatown and get a folding Chinese screen that will cover the doorway, but that won't cut down sound transmission.

It'll be for an apartment that we're leasing for college. I'm pretty sure the landlord won't let us install door hingest. And yea, I might be stuck with a room without a door. Seeing as I do have a girlfriend and like to study in a quiet environment, I'd kinda like my own privacy.

If he won't let you put up any hardware then your stuck with some kind of curtain with a tension rod. You can get a sliding door fairly cheap but you'd have to put up a track for it to slide on...

It's essentially a sliding door but it is hidden inside the wall...

Assuming you just need privacy, and don't have roommates who would go at length to remove your privacy, buy a wooden wardrobe, a little wider than the doorway. Remove the back cover, and use the front door as a door. Secure the wardrobe from inside the room, using small clamps on either side. You can lock it from inside. This thing weighs 165lbs and should do it:

Take measurements of the opening (height and width and thicknes off the wall). It will allow us to better determine what you can do.

my friend had the same issue. her room wasn't meant to be a bedroom...it was more like a study den. so the doorway didn't have a door.

What size/shape/whatever is the doorway? Why is there no door? Does it lead into a personal or living room? Why don't you have a door? You are strange.

I agree that a pocket door would be the best way to go, but there is a lot of work involved in installing one. A lot more than installing a bi fold or something like that.

How about just installing a pre-hung door? What is the size of the opening?

I did the same thing in college. except it was a 18' wall w/ door. i just built a wall out of 2X4s, some paneling and foam insulation. built a cheap pre-hung into the wall and held the whole thing in with shims and a couple screws right around the door. worked out great and no damage to the surrounding woodwork (with the exception of two screwholes which i patched. the landlord almost shit her pants when she first saw it, but i showed her how it was held in by pressure. i think that you could def install a prehung door with shims/pressure fit, or screw some 2x4s into the door acting as a clamp around the woodwork/wall that you dont want to damage. worked out great for me. good luck
