Beware of Samsung front loaders (washers). We bought ours back on December and now it sounds like an apache helicopter is landing on our house each time we do the wash. This is after 3 visits from the Samsung repair guy. I'm about to toss the thing out and just buy a new one.

wow, thats a first. Samsungs were by far the quietest/most stable units we sold when I worked for sears (3years). Unfortunately front loaders were the worse for 2nd and 3rd floor installs until Samsung launched their VRT's. I remember going to meetings and watching these things stabilize on ping pong balls with odd loads. Sounds as if these are either unbalanced, shipping bolts are in place or a defective unit. As for the op, good choice on the LG's. I always thought they were great units, I was just never a fan of them failing the door test (one of two issue with them). LG holds the new kenmore contract and designs 80-90% of their units. So for future buyers, don't waste your time buying an kenmore. Lastly, buying the pedestals for these things are an absolute waste of money. LG poorly designed the plates that hold them into place, so when you have to separate them (Moving) you end up bending these cheaply made adhesive plates (8total). The cost to replace these are outrageous!!!

The last bit of information I would give you if these are indeed installed on pier and beam is to remove them from the pedestals if they are installed. Sometimes the washer may have a hard time calibrating itself on cycles if it cant sense the floor correctly. In the worse case scenario if a solution is not found, switching to a HE top loader would be best. If a front loader can not stabalize on your floors, it can cause some serious foundation problems. A HE top loader will fix the problem by dispensing the energy outward instead of downward. As for top loaders if you decide to go that route, whirlpool Cabrios are the best of the bunch.

I'd like to hear from the people that have lived with HE washers for a long time. Has it been reliable? If front load does it smell from mold?
What are advantages of HE over standard besides that they use less water? Water is cheap so do I really care about that? I've read that HE have longer cycles and that the detergent costs more. True?
I have an old school top load Amana that does a good job but it's now over 10 years old and sounds like the bearing is going. I think that's an expensive repair so I think I'd rather just replace it.
Anyone own a Speed Queen top load? They seem about as old school as you can get and seem to be built like a tank. Not sure if I can justify the cost though. The Amana was a mid range machine and did a good job for 10 years. Maybe just get another comparable one.
I'm not interested in replacing my dryer, it's old and I've been very happy with it.

65 bucks is smarter than dropping 700-1000 clams.
Anyway, keep in mind that not only is their water savings, but electrical savings as the new machines run MUCH more efficiently on the electrical side of things.
Perhaps water is dirt cheap in Jersey...I dunno. Out here the cost of water continues to rise all the time. When I got my front load GE HE washer years back I noticed a significant decrease in my water bill.
As for the mold smell.....never had an issue whatsoever.
Three things:
One, the door is always left ajar when not in use.
Two, I live in a very dry climate.
Three, the fist machines way back when had issues because they did not drain out the water effectively inside and on the door seals. Today's machines pretty much have that problem solved.
HE Detergent costs.....never really noticed it being much of a cost increase.

I realize they're more fashionable, but I hear too many shitty stories about the front loaders... not worth the risk. I mean, if you have a cup full of water, does it make the most sense to hold it at 90degrees?

haha, just noticed that I never followed up on this. I ended up tossing that machine in the trash and bought a top load Speed Queen. I did just fix my dryer last week.
The Speed Queen is awesome old school type washer, mechanical control. Love it so far.

These seems to be the de facto washer/dryer thread. I want to get a new washer. I'm sticking with a top loader but avoiding BS brands like Admiral, Hotpoint, and Amana. Should I avoid LED displays and stick the good ole knobs? I have a queen bed set and don't plan on going king. I'd like a larger tub 4+ but I guess 3.5-3.8 can do the job for those comforters.

I really want one of those Sammy's that has the little washing basket in the top of it since we don't have a sink in our laundry room, but our w/d are only like 5yrs old

It's a great washer. I bought it knowing they explode (before the recall).
The problem is the fast spin cycle is super fucking fast.
You add that with a big load (bedding) or a load of polys that don't allow the moisture to wick (think sleeping bags)
BOOM Head Shot!!!!
We don't over load it with bulky items and we don't wash those type of polys on high
Life is good!

Our new house, the prior owners left their front load Frigidaire washer/dryer with the pedestals & we really didn't like them. The capacity was a lot less that the Cabrios. So, we gave them to my wife's brother's fiance who was moving to a new apartment with no W/D.
