New Landscaping Pics - (New pics 2/20: Sod installation complete!)

Slowly but surely we are finishing the yard around the pool and side of the house. Below are some before/after pics from what we've had done over the last few weeks through today (fence/gate was completed this morning). Can't wait till it's done. We're almost there!!

Before:

After:

It's hard to tell in these pics... but that little wooded area where the orange leaves are still hanging on (almost straight ahead in the above pic) was our project the last two weekends. We pulled out all of the honeysuckle and vines and completely cleaned it out. Then this past weekend we planted 4 azaleas, 2 rhododendron, and 2 small pines in there to give us some low coverage since we cleaned it up. They are also all evergreen plants, so they'll provide coverage all year round (not that we're in the yard much when it's cold). To the left of that area we also planted 4 dogwoods. That whole area will be mulched and it will connect the two beds that are there now...

Before:

After:

I took the after pic a little further over then the before, hence the maple right in your face here (oops ). Here our little project area is to the left. It's still a little hard to tell, but you can get an idea of what it looked like before, then after we cleaned it out and planted. BTW, those two holly and one magnolia tree were supposed to be 8-10 feet tall and they're closer to 12-14 feet tall! Fine by us. Didn't cost us any more and looks even better! We have plenty of privacy from our neighbor's when the trees are in bloom, but put those up so we will have it all year round.

Here is a perpendicular shot of the new trees:

The angle makes them look off centered, but they are all evenly spaced. In fact, the day after they planted them we made our landscaper come back and move one over ~6-8" b/c they weren't exactly symmetrical

Oh, and don't mind the bricks around the edge of the mulch. We have been playing with different edging (brick, flagstone, none, etc) and I just haven't removed those bricks yet...

More after, further back:

The columns were actually just done last Thursday, and the fence and get they installed today. We need to move some irrigation around b/c of the landscaping, plus add some extensions to the drip to get all of the new plants... so we should be able to do that over the next week... then the sod can go in, we can plant some stuff in the new bed that will be between the fence and driveway, and we're done (hopefully)! I just can't wait for the red clay to go away. We've had it in some form or another back there since we moved in b/c of everything that has been done. We will not be sad to see it go!

.

Looks good.

Is your house brand new? Are they still building new ones? Is it a Country Club Community?

The reason I ask is that it looks like the same place my father in law is having a house built.

Front sod, rear seed. The grass did grow in after we closed, but not completely... and then the whole rear yard got ripped up again when the pool was installed which started in Oct. 2005. So the lawn was only growing in the back for about 10 months before all of the equipment ripped it all up and we went back to clay again.

For example... here is a pic of the yard before we started:

So you can see it came in great in spots, but not so great in others. One more season of overseeding and it would have been a nice yard... but we ripped it up well before that. We also didn't maintain the back yard b/c we knew we were putting the pool in.

Yes, we built the house but we have been here about 21 months now... so it's not brand new at this point... but is still new and you get that new house smell once in a while . They only have one lot left in the community and so far, they have not started building on it.

It is not a country club community but is a master planned community. We have 4 different builders who built in here. There are common areas with trails and a pond, plus a pool and playground. All of the builders have sold their models and are out of here, so when that last lot sells, that builder will have to send in a crew to build on it... but that shouldn't be a big deal b/c they are still in the area, they have just moved on to other communities which they are developing.

All I can remember is that there a big country club community he's moving into. There's still a lot of building going on. He showed us general pictures of the area, looks like yours. I just asked my wife, she can't remember.

I do remember he's paying like 35K for landscaping, not to the builder. He was in Davidson and said he's not too far from there now. I think he gets to move in around March.

^ There are a few large country club developments around here. Ballantyne CC, Providence CC, Firethorne CC, The Club at Longview.... to name a few. All of them are very close to us, so that could be why it looks similar. If you happen to get a name I'd be curious, b/c we looked into a few of them.

And I hear ya on landscaping. You don't even want to know what we have put into this yard so far

Well, I was way off. He's got a place at River Run CC. in Davidson. The way my wife talked about it, I thought he was moving closer to Charlotte.

Ahh. Yeah, Davidson is a little ways away... so I'm not familiar with that area. I've only heard nice things about it though... so that's good

^ Thanks!

The irrigation should be finished up today (more drips added and sprinkler heads moved to compensate for the columns and large trees).... so hopefully the last bit of mulch and then sod will be done within a week or two!

Looking good... This is the home stretch, eh ?? Once you're done with this part of the yard, you can focus on maintenance instead of installation...

^ Yeah, this is pretty much the final leg. Can't wait for it to be done.

Maintenance hasn't been that bad. Pretty much all of those plants (except for those large new trees and the few we planted last weekend) have been in for about a year. Every single plant in the backyard and in the front is on a drip system, and the yard (front and rear) has a sprinkler system, so watering is automatic. Our landscaper will cut the grass when he does the front lawn, and since it's not a large area, it won't really change our bill. And the plants only get trimmed once a year... and not all of them need trimming. So once we fertilize in the next week or two, it won't be that bad.

Hey all.

Just some new quick pics. They finished the mulch today (well, about 99%) and graded the yard. Sod should be coming tomorrow!!

Sorry so dark, especially on that last one. I just snapped them not too long ago and the sun is not only getting ready to set, but was behind a cloud. But hopefully this time tomorrow I'll have some grass shots!!

That is our landscaper's. They just left it here last night instead of hauling it back and forth since they needed to come back today to finish.

Thumbs up

Well, they finished up this afternoon! Already ran the irrigation (thankfully that works. It was installed last summer and had only been tested once until today), so the yard is nice and watered I think it looks great. We are so happy to finally have grass...

Yeah. It was 72 degrees today... so almost time to play out there. Gotta let the sod root itself first though

What grass did you end up using (front and rear)? I'm looking to fix up my yard this year and just finished reading your thread on Amazoy (looks good and I don't care about the neighbors' weed-infested yards), but the plug process looks like a serious time killer. I can't see your pics at work, but from the other posts, I'm going to assume it looks great.
