It is the Honeywell RTH9580WF Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat (RTH9580WF) | Honeywell

I have had it for about a year and a half and had zero issues with it. Only reason for the upgrade was cause of the remote sensors the Ecobee has and when away I want to be able to set the temp based off the room my dogs are kenneled in and not care about what the rest of the house is at.

Switched out my Honeywell tstat for a 3G Nest to pair with my new Google Home. Got an awesome deal from someone on C-List who didn't want his new in box because it didn't work with his alarm system.

ecobee3 has an extra sensor included, for another room.
with the nest, you can add sensors by purchasing the nest camera

that may be the ONLY difference, save for software.

After Tony Fadell CEO and founder of Nest left makes me wonder if Nest will go down hill.

?
wasnt Mr. Fadell the one who was making the Nest team uncomfortable?
I believe he set ridiculous dead lines that the team COULD not meet.
so, they asked him to step down/leave.

Kinda scary, the All-Mighty Alphabet tracks my every move...Knows what store I am in and shows coupons for that store..

Now, they have data from the past 3-5 years of people's home temperatures!!!

Here Jake!
cccolts is using the ECOBEE3 ONLY because of the extra sensor.

and is the only difference, save the software between the nest.

so, if you're looking to keep a room cooled/heated separate of what the nest/ecobee does automatically...
you can either buy the ecobee3 with an extra sensor...OR you can purchase the Nest and the Nest Cams as sensors.

one has sensors inculded
the other, you have to buy sensors

If you don't need support for Wireless Room Sensors, Occupancy Detection, Smart Home/Away features, and Accessories (HRVs, Ventilators, Humidifiers, Dehumidifiers) there is the ecobee3 lite.

its cheaper too.

also Nest isn't HomeKit compatible. Ecobee is.

That isn't the only difference. Ecobee3 is also more accurate. It is +/- 1 degree from where you set it and the nest is +/- 3 degrees of where you set it.

Good to know. I was unaware of this.

I personally like the design of the Nest units more especially now that they offer them in gunmetal and copper finishes as well. The software though I still think the Ecobee has a better design on.

right...so basically, one is choosing based off if one needs an extra sensor or not.

if extra sensor is needed, EcoBee3!
if extra sensor is not needed, then its up in the air, with BOTH nest and ecobee doing what they are designed to do...save you money by automating HVAC

I probably wouldnt go back to Nest.
they're trying to create an expensive ecosystem...with the nest cams and protects...

But I am perfectly fine with my first gen Nest and dont foresee to upgrade, unless I move out of mommas basement

If I were buying today I would go Ecobee for the sensors.

Price aside, I find the idea of having to install interior cameras to get temperature sensing ... creepy.

And that is because I find the entire concept of interior residential camera monitoring creepy.

I personally can't say my Nest has actually save me any money. Its just way more convenient to use than whatever builder grade honeywell POS was in here when we bought the place.

My dad got the ecobee3...Because of HomeKit, etc I would probably go ecobee at this point.

Not sure I understand how the ecobee system with the sensors work. For example my house is a split level with one central HVAC system that blows into each room in the house covers the lower and upper level, my thermostat is in the upper level in the hallway which is very close to the living room and kitchen. Since I have one system my lower level is a little colder about 5 degrees than the upper level and some of the rooms might a degree or two different from the other rooms. So let's say i put a sensor down stairs what benefit will i get if i'm downstairs, my wife is in the living room upstair and girls are in their rooms, we will still have different temperature correct?

if i have a sensor downstairs and get the temp to my liking (lets say 70 degrees) that means my upstairs will be too hot (about 75 degrees), I don't think the ecobee would even it out, that would depend on the HVAC system itself.

the main objective for these thermostats is to save you money.
if the thermostat doesnt see activity in front of it, it will go to sleep or go into "eco mode"
this is a problem for mcmansions...
if i am in one room, but not in the room that the thermostat is in, the thermostat will think I am not home and will go into Eco mode.

add a sensor and now thermostat knows I am in room and wont go into eco mode.

Nest also solved this by using the GEO Location on your phone, so it knows if you are home or not.
it can also track MULTIPLE family members

Correct.. it's just a gimmick. If you want true dual zone, you'd need to install a second system, or install a motorized damper in the duct to separate the downstairs and upstairs. In the short term, if there's a big difference in temperatures that is causing discomfort, the best thing you can do is leave the fan ON while in occupied mode. This will help to equalize the temperatures in the home while you're not calling for heat or cooling.

I rarely use the Nest software, I just tell the GH to set the temp to whatever it needs to be. My gripe with the Nest is that the auto scheduling thing is dumb. It thinks that someone is home for lunch every day and runs the furnace accordingly. The only one home is the dog and he wears a jacket all day. I just turned it off and we'll see if that saves some more money. I just set my own temps and schedule, the learning thing is a farce. I only have a Nest because of the Google Home interface otherwise I would have kept my Honeywell and been done with it.

This was my question too. Unless there's a dual zone HVAC system, there's not much a second sensor will do for you other than make one side cooler or warmer than the other just to maintain the same temp. It doesn't separately control the air delivery to each sensor.

I did and that sounds awesome...just remember that Assistant is different from device to device so the extent to the capabilities of the TV based assistant might be different from that of your phone...or the home...or Allo...or anything else for that matter.

sure, for now.
BUTT, an OTA update could give uniformity to ALL devices.

remember, GH is competing with Amazon Echo with their lower price entry points...30 bux for a dot. and soon, Alexa will come to FIRETV sticks.

so, its SUPER smart to include GH assistant in TVs to get them in the home faster than Amazon Alexa

Oh I don't disagree at all, just pointing it out. The fact that G-Home can't make calendar appointments or reminders is the stupidest part of it. That is the basis of an assistant's job...

To make this work even better the next thing you would need to really add are the controllable vents for each room. That way you can limit the air going into each room once it has reached its desired temperature. I have not gotten this far but am definitely considering it for my first floor for sure. You can then using a smart home hub like SmartThings to integrate everything. I believe a setup with both multiple sensors and smart vents in primary rooms will be in the long term where you really start to see savings.

In other fun news, I can now control my TV using GH. My TV has said there's a major update coming soon but it hasn't actually downloaded anything...
