I ended up just treating mine like any other programable thermostat since there is usually someone home at my house most of the time.
If I had some ambition I would pair our phones to it for auto away.

they're gimmicky - I prefer to enter my own schedule
If you want something useful for a homeowner, use honeywell's redlink stuff. You can get a lot more information from the system and there is a lot more you can do with it as far as accessories and additional equipment.

Also, the new Nest-E looks like a cheap puck light.

^Alphabet, formally known as google, is merging Nest back into google's hardware division.
to better intergrate the stupid sucky ass assistant.
I don't have a google home, or use voice control to use the Nest.
I don't have any other connected devices other than phones, tablets, computers and the Nest.
I just dont see the appeal to add the Assistant to every Effn thing. I still have to ask like at least 3 times to get what I want. fuck voice control.

I love saving energy with the Nest. but other than that...Can we just fast-forward to where everything plays nice AND be private!?
i'm not fond of these IoT devices sending info back to the cloud every hour.
At least most devices send encrypted info...The TVs are the ones that are sending unencrypted info...

Also, it's how all this different stuff talks to each other...

Not sure how I feel about this. I am intrigued by the Nest security system, though. ADT is raking me over the coals.

Google Home is leaps and bounds above Alexa... she keeps misunderstanding my fobby accents apparently

I think in 5 years, you'll be 100% correct. Their models are different. On Alexa, you install a skill and it makes Alexa smarter. In Google Home, the idea is that it gets smarter through machine learning and AI without any add-ons necessary.

I don't even think it'll take 5 years, but that wasn't what i was referring to. The skills are definitely a lot better integrated with GH, I was just referring to a single issue: voice recognition and understanding intention.

Alexa is starting to suggest I buy stuff.... I can see where this is going to go downhill once I'm fully in her grip, so I gotta get out while I'm still relatively new.

I picked one up for $180 on a Black Friday sale. Just installed it, pretty cool
I think it’s still $180 on Amazon if you want to get one

Just FYI, in Michigan (and other qualifying regions) there is a $75 rebate from DTE Energy (Gas) and a $50 rebate from Consumers Energy (Electric). I had a $70 dollar Amazon gift card when I switched to a Visa Amazon Prime credit card as well, so I purchased the Nest T3017US Learning Thermostat for next to nothing.

Not really, works with Nest is dead. So if you bought something because it "Works with Nest" it won't work with Nest in a few months. Amazon Alexa being the only exception

Good thing I use Google Home/Assistant for everything

Do people actually (meaning their bills have dropped X%) save money with NEST thermostats or is it just "fun" to have one?

The house I bought came with on. It's a little bit more convenient for setting up and phone connectivity. Plus you can monitor your history and you get emailed monthly reports. You really don't need the whole Alexa/Google Asst thing.

We have a floor in our house we don't live in. It has definitely saved us money there compared to our dumb thermostat. That being said, I can't for certain tell you how much I have saved because we bought when our AC units died. So a new unit AND a new thermostat makes it impossible to say whether or not the thermostat helped.

I like ours for the simple fact of accessibility. Logging in on the phone makes it perfect for us to warm/cool the house when we are one our way back from vacation and turn the temps up or down while we are not there. See the usage emails and what not do help. I don't pay our bills for utilities (GF does) but she doesn't complain unless there is a spike in the bill. Usually never happens though. The cool factor is there too!

It's circling the drain. Going to suck when they kill it and I have to replace mine.

I installed two Nest E thermostats in the old rental house when I just moved back in. My take, having previously lived in this house for 4 years is that, yes, they are definitely saving me money.

Just ordered a Nest Gen 3 through ComEd... $149. The thing I miss most now that I've lived a few months without a Nest is the ability to just leave it alone. No need to switch between heat/cool.

My wife was against the white E Nest but I picked it up for $35 with a Google Home at Wallyworld so I couldn't say no. After a few months with it, she has grown to like the look of it over the 3rd Generation we used to have and it functions just as well.
