I bought the Lowe's 4-cycle straight shaft with edger attachment last week and so far no problems with anything. I'll probably get the blower at a later date. It's definitely much quieter, more convenient, and easier starting than the 15 year old Craftsman it replaced. Also, in case you don't want to mess with spool thread by itself, Lowes also sells a head replacement system that simply bolts on although it's a little more expensive than just the line. At my age, I am guessing that this is the last weedwacker I will have to buy. In any event, for all those in the market, 4-cycle is the way to go.

I'd be pissed if I had to go out and spend money to whack it

I'm surprised it took 44 posts to get that comment.

Despite all the fine advice here, I gave a Troy-bilt 4-cycle from Lowes a try today. I didn't have a problem with the line feed - didn't really get that far. Damn thing wouldn't keep running unless I held it rotated at about a 30 degree angle - turn it parallel to the ground and it would stall in seconds.

I got my money back and will continue my own search for the replacement for my weakening 7-year old B&D cordless whacker.

Looked at the Toro's at Home Depot, but didn't buy one. I really don't want a 2-cycle engine since all of my other machines (Honda mower, Honda snowblower, Honda engined power washer, Honda engined pump) are all 4-cycles.

After my girlfriend's Saab did it's swan dive we went out and got her a used Plymouth Breeze (insert flame here). It was in great shape but needed tires really bad. We left the lot an ddrove across the street and bought a set of Michelins for it. There was a rebate for a free electric B&D Grass Hog weed wacker that came in the mail about a month later.

That was 6 years ago, the tires AND the car had since bit the dust. The Grass Hog is just now starting to go south.

Next one is a going to be a Stihl.

In a few more years see if the motor spins up and takes a few seconds for the spindle to start moving too. That's what mine is doing.

WHAT EVER YOU DO DON'T' GET A RYAN!!

My sisters ex-boyfriend runs a lawn equipment repair shop and he said it's a given that the head bolts WILL back off and blow the head gasket. Every one of them does it.

I can't get that weedwacker to line-out when I am edging. WTF? It works fine when weedwacking, but not when you twist it to edge. Anyhoot, I went to Home de"Pot" and got a gas powered 20cc weedwacker featherlite for $60. My neighbor had one and worked ok. Hopefully this one lasts for at least 5 years.
