My parents massive kitchen gut and remodel (pic heavy)
Hey yall,
I always find these type of threads interesting so I thought I'd share with you the progress on my parents kitchen.
My parents moved into this house in the mid eighties and I grew up here. Every since I can remember, my mother complained about the kitchen and she is finally getting a new one.
A little history on the house: It was built in 1958ish. A local lumber company developed the neighborhood so there is wood everywhere, even the subfloor in the kitchen is unfinished hardwood.
The house, as far as we can tell, was originally a 2 bed/2bath but has had several remodels over the years and is now a 3 bed/2 bath at a little over 2,100 sq/ft. My parents have already done the bathrooms and living room, so the kitchen is the last thing to be done.
Along with the kitchen they are finally replacing the roof (the roof has about 4 layers on it, including the original cedar shingles), changing the slope on the roof to accommodate larger overhangs, adding gutters, replacing the exterior siding on the back (the front and sides are all brick), replacing the windows, and moving the back door.
The project is supposed to take 10 weeks but i wouldn't be surprised if it took longer. Ill try and update this every few days or so to keep yall entertained!
Anyways, on to the pictures!
BEFORE: (pardon the mess, we were moving everything out of the kitchen and living room at the time)
this is looking into the living room, with the kitchen on the right
this is a door going from the dining room into the kitchen, it will be gone
this back door will be gone
And now for the fun part, demo:
behind the oven
uncovered some washer/dryer connections in the pantry...
peg board used as shims
cabinets gone!
a view from the living room, the wall separating the living room and kitchen will be gone
more peg board, this time under tile....interesting way to do tile...
flooring gone
on the right is where the oven and fridge used to be
hardwoods as subfloor... they dont build em like they used to!
view from the living room
where the sink dishwasher etc. used to be
furdowns gone!
more of the hardwood subfloor
you can see the original cedar roof here...
and here too.
where the kitchen table used to be
and for fun, some 60's flooring which was under the pantry cabinets.
stay tuned, I should have more pictures in a few hours. I hope yall enjoy and let me know if you have any questions!

Just to give yall and idea of what the cabinets will look like, here are some before and after pics of the living room which was done several years ago.
The cabinets in the kitchen will compliment the built ins in the living room and will all be custom.

not only did the appliances look old, they worked like they were old too, we were glad to see them gone.
Today they finished ripping out the wall between the living room and kitchen.
Here are some pics:
a picture from the living room looking at what used to be a wall
on the ceiling you can see where the wall used to be
original hardwoods! (unfortunately, not salvageable)
Thats all for now, more pictures tomorrow im sure!

The workers just finished uncovering more of the floor:
The house used to end where the hardwoods end in the bottom of this picture:
you can also see it in this picture:
At this point they plan to rip out all of the floors in the kitchen, thread or stagger in new hardwoods, and refinish all the hardwoods throughout the house to match.
And finally some plans of the finished kitchen to keep yall entertained

Second Week: More Progress
More progress was made today, we went to the stone yard and selected tile, granite for the counter and marble for the island. We also ran by the window and door place to make our final selections on those. Of course I took more pictures:
Drywall Gone:
Who knew Gold Bond made insulation!?
The door on the left will be gone, and the door on the right will be two pocket doors, meeting in the middle:
To the left of the plans on the wall you can see where a window was in the past:
This is one side of the doorway where there will be a pocket door... In the past there must have been one there:
This is the marble which will go on the island, the other tiles will go on the backsplash:
This is the granite which will be on the countertops:
and a close up of the granite (granite will be in a "leather" finish as you can see in the picture)
Plumbing and no more insulation!:
Sometime in the past there was an exhaust fan in the kitchen where the circular hole is:
and the exteiror where the exhaust fan would have come out:
looking at the kitchen from the hallway:
and looking at the kitchen from the corner of the living room:
looking at the living room from the kitchen:
and looking at the hallway opening from the kitchen:
pocket door frame installed, looking from the formal living room:
and another of the pocket door progress from the kitchen/living room
Thats all for now!

I like how open it is. And the stone choices are nice too.

Thanks!
And now for more progress...
Plumbing and insulation were done today. Also, they finished the pocket door and framed out the wall separating the dining and kitchen so that the depth would match the paneled wall.
Water line going to ice maker in the bar area:
New plumbing for the kitchen sink:
Water line going to the subzero fridge:
Framed out wall and completed pocket door tracks:
And all the new insulation:
Thats all for now, more tomorrow!

So I havent been over there in a few days but I went by today...
Yesterday they did the brick work on the back to close up the old door, but to say the least im not satisfied with it. Im not sure if the mortar still has to dry or what, but thats off in color, the brick is too red and as a result doesnt match very well, and the brick seems to be angling up toward the new section...
Im not a brick layer but from what i can tell they are probably going to have to take it out and re do it because right now we are not satisfied with it.
Here is what it looks like:
During our bathroom remodel we moved a window on the side of the house and that new brick is hardly noticeable so i know its possible to do it right.
I digress... today they were working on all new electrical in the kitchen, new outlets, new wiring, new switch locations, new lighting, etc. Ill snap a few pictures of that later today when they are done working. Hopefully that will turn out better than the brick

Make MyTL Great Again
It's possible that if the just put the new brick all the way to the corner edge, everything will look fine. The corner might take care of the color difference.

The new brick isn't the least bit level...slants up to the right. The color is off too much, too. If they can't get a better color match, then do as Adam said and redo the whole section.

definitely not perfect, but once it gets weathered I don't think you'll be able to tell the difference
