mental note: make sure that can of stain is shaken at store

the wife and i stained the front deck a week ago with no problems.

i take the day off to stain the rear deck, and a beautiful day it was.

i get down to the last 10 boards and suddenly the stain is a lighter color. i was like wtf?

i had 1/3 can left so i was puzzled, i also had 1/3 left from the front deck. so i checked that one and it was the same light color.

before opening the can i shook it like the instructions says.

i figured, what the hell, i should compine and then shake again.

still same lighter color.

so since i need a break, i take the can to lowes and ask what the problem could be.

the lady at the paint dept said that the cans should have been shaken before i took them home.

she exchanged the 2/3 full can for a new full shaken one at no charge(i didnt ask for it)

i came home and finished the job and it looks much better.

cliffnotes: have the store shake your can of stain before going home

Funny I would have thought it would have been darker toward the end of the can if you didn't shake it. All the pigments tend to sink to the bottom of the can.

^ I would have thought the same thing. At least you got your problem fixed though. BTW did you have to go over the first park of the deck with the new can? Or did the lighter color just come toward the end.

One of my co-workers was going to restain his front deck. They shook the can for him at the store but he figured he should shake it some more before he started. Out on to the deck he went, while trying to figure out the best starting spot he went ahead and started shaking the can. POP! off flies the lid and 2/3 of the can of stain hits the side of his light tan house like a wave crashing onto the shore...

Add mental note: Make sure lid on stain is tight prior to shaking can near house.

On the other hand, as with dallison, sometimes it's the pros that miss a step.

And if you wrote it down here or anywhere else, is it still a "mental note?"
