It's a decorative lamp, so it's supposed to be a G40 globe. And I doubt it will fit, nothing does

question for you guys... I have a front lamp post with a light to illuminate the entrance to the driveway/pathway... since I keep the light on for most of the night, I was wondering if anyone has had success with an LED bulb in this application... we don't have street lights so I'd like the highest possible Lumens... suggestions???

All of my outside illumination is LED now. The color and brightness are indistinguishable from the incandescents I replaced. I didn't buy anything special -- just the highest lumen LEDs that I could find for the sockets at Costco.

I got some Sylvania dimmable bulbs at Lowes the other day, they work great. I had tried a dimmable bulb that I bought on Amazon a while back and it flickered pretty bad, the Sylvanias work fine with with a normal dimmer and were cheaper, $3.99 for 40 watt replacements and $6.99 for 60 watt, 100 watt ones were over $20 still tho. They had Sylvanias cheaper than the house brand/Utilitech or whatever. No complaints I'm gonna go back and buy more even though my CFLs every where else.

^I'm also interested in floods. They would have to be dimmable because I have mine set to goto half brightness when there is no motion detected. They also need to be able to survive Jersey winter.

I made the mistake of not insulating the garage when we built our home and the fluorescent bulbs don't stand up to cold winters. Have zero issues with the LED candlebra bulbs in the coach lights so I will be converting over the shop lights to LED's soon.

yea in my new house, the garage was an extension and I don't think they insulated it at all... fortunately the fluorescents have held up ok even in this harsh winter we had but i'm going to change them out to LED once I paint and clean up the garage...

The T8 florescent lights that we installed in our garage back in 2009 have delivered great light but at a cost. In the winter they take an eternity to warm up, they can't be turned on and off frequently (this took awhile to figure out) and recycling the bad tubes has become impossible around here. One tube recently took a dump so I decided to give the Cree T8 LED replacements a whirl and despite a lower lumen rating (1700 vs 2800 on the traditional T8s), they work just as well if not better.

So far we've replaced all of the incandescent bulbs in our living spaces and outdoor lights with Cree LEDs and have experienced zero failures. The T8 replacements aren't cheap at $22 each but if the price comes down like it has with the standard incandescent-style replacements (now sub-$5 at HD), they'll probably be below $10 each by the end of the year. Rather than replacing the garage lamps en masse like we did with the incandescents, the T8s in the garage will simply be retrofitted to LED as they expire.

if your housings don't have milky/frosted covers, get frosted... the clear ones will give a harsh cut off on the walls...

Just a little followup on these bulbs.

It looks like their main function is to get up front cost down. The 40w and 60w are $8, previous gen is $10. The warranty is 3 years, previous gen is 10 years. The 60w is less efficient then the previous gen, 11w compared to 9.5w. The 40w draws the same power as previous gen, 6w. The new bulbs do have increased lumen output over previous. Both generations are dimmable. The new bulbs are plastic, i believe the previous ones are coated glass.

I think i will try two of the new 40w in my outdoor light fixtures. For enclosed fixtures I may stick with the old design.

You can see how they really cost reduced this compared to the previous bulb.

I was going to purchase a couple 40w equivalent 4Flows today but HD had the previous gen on sale (clearance?) for $4.97. If you need some 40w equivalents go get'em before they are gone. I got the last 2 at my local HD.

update, well one of them has died and the replacement is $25. I know it's under a 10 year warranty but Home Depot wants the original packaging and a copy of the receipt. Not willing to go thru the hassle, I guess these are garbage.

Buy a new one keep that packaging and receipt and wait a month to return.

Id say it was defective from the beginning and an odd failure. I have had mostly Cree LEDs (from home depot) throughout my house for years now upgrading as bulbs go out and not one has failed yet. I have had the 90w equivalent in my garage for well over a year and they are on almost non stop and they still work perfectly.

Just picked up 10 65W Cree BR30 bulbs for our basement. Love them. Home Depot had them for $8 a piece. Good time to buy.

Saw these in Home Depot today. $10 for a 3 pack. Anyone have them? They use 10w.
CNET says they are not dimmable.

both fluorescent bulbs in my garage went out, my bathroom light has been working on and off the past few days, so i picked up 4 of these. They were on sale for $19.99 each at my local hardware store. (not Home Depot)

i like that they're direct replacement bulbs, no need to remove the ballast. aint nobody got time for that!

I'm starting to think these manufacturers are doing something to the bulbs to have them fail so we keep buying them. I've had about 3 Cree bulbs failed on me already within 2 years.

So I have had 3 Cree bulbs fail me, 2 A19 bulbs and 1 BR30 bulb around the same time. The process was really easy, I called Cree, gave them the info on the bulbs and they sent me new replacements just like that, no questions asked. Took them 2-3 days to get the bulbs to me. Not bad! Sucks they died so quickly but at least the company is making good on replacements. I didn't even have to send the old ones back.

I am looking to do LED bulbs (BR30s) in my recessed cans. I do not plan to buy the entire LED retrofit housing, just a simple removal of the incandescent bulb and replacement with BR30 LEDs. Something like the ones listed in the link below.
EcoSmart 65W Equivalent Soft White BR30 Dimmable LED Light Bulb (6-Pack)-ECSBR3065SW6PK - The Home Depot

Amateur question - does anyone know if this setup is ok? My specific concern, is that I heard that sometimes the LEDs heatup too much when in a recessed can. Although the LEDs run quite a bit cooler than regular bulbs, I read one article where there was mention of some complications which could be as simple as having shorter led bulb life, to bigger risks like a fire hazard. Can anyone validate this? Anyone run the setup I am proposing for an extended period of time and come across any issues? Thanks
