Kitchen Island Hood Location Problem

Hey Guys.
I got a kitchen remodel problem that I hope someone here can help me solve. Here are the facts:

-Island cooktop
-Island hood above cooktop w/ six inch duct piping
-Stud in ceiling preventing the cooktop ducting to be moved to exactly centered over cooktop. Ducting butted as far as the stud will allow.
-right now installed and about three inches off center. It is noticeable and looks terrible. Contractor says that’s the best he can do.

Any ideas on how to get this centered? I live in a two story house and there is a bedroom directly over the kitchen so I don’t want to mess with the ceiling studs too much. Thanks for reading and for your feedback in advance.

i am assuming that the new cooktop is already bought and installed??? i have seen newer cooktops where the vent is built into the cooktop so it pulls all smoke down into the cooktop and then routed away...

can you post a pic of what i looks like? is the ceiling finshed to where the vent currently sits?

If you've got room to bring it down you could do it easy. Center it, run your pipe and have it go around the joist.

Re-route exhaust duct around stud or get a down draft cooktop. If you are talking about a floor joist, depending on the condition (which hard to understand without pictures), you could cut a portion of the floor joist and re-block/double up on the floor joist.

If you are slab on grade, no dice on the down draft cooktop, as this will be crazy expensive to do in an existing condition.

First, fire the contractor. If he can't simply re-route the duct then he needs to go pound rocks. I would just go to home depot or Lowe's, buy two 45 degree bends and re-route the cook top duct +3" to accommodate the joist.

Can you build a soffet down from the ceiling to hide the routed piping.
Best example I can give you.

But I agree, if there is any way to go with a downdraft cooktop, aesthetically it looks so much better.
