If any appliance needs the Nest treatment, it's sprinkler controllers. They are stuck in the '80s from an interface standpoint.

This is the most advanced I have ever seen. You even program the depth of the plant roots!

From an interface and mobile integration point of view, it's in the stone ages. They are still using buttons and multi-line LCD displays.

It's simply not in the Nest class.

I live in AZ.

That shit would be at 100% every cycle and the rain sensor would die of boredom/loneliness.

I am guessing this is not their target market.

Ooh, this seems cool. The site says it's not available for purchase yet. Any ideas on pricing? I like that it seems to have its own weather sensor so it knows the exact conditions of where it's watering. That's a step up from the controllers that get weather data from NOAA or other sources, which are close, but sometimes not accurate.

I need a new sprinkler timer. I've been considering this one. RainMachine - The Forecast Sprinkler Controller It doesn't seem to be listed on Amazon.com any more, though.

I just ran across one called OpenSprinkler (https://opensprinkler.com/). It appeals to my geeky Linux heart.

It has been out for (2) years. I picked one up Saturday for $170. No internet connection. Remote sensor measures daily high and low temperatures plus rainfall. ROM has historical data for your Zip. You do not tell it how long to water, but soil type, sprinkler type/application rate, plant root depth, type of plant, how much sun, slope and lots more. If not programed correctly it could be a nightmare! If setup correctly I understand it will save lots of water. Add-on module is required if you have more than (4) valves,
