Our HOA has that authority, but they never use it.

We have a core set of people who've been on the HOA for a while, and both my wife and I have served (she's on the social committee, I've been on the board including a stint as president). It's a good way to get involved with your neighbors. If you don't step up, then the people who just like to keep themselves busy with other people's business are the ones who get in there by default.

Some HOAs, including those that I represented, will send out a warning, then a violation notice with a meeting date before contracting to have the work done and billing the owner.
The HOAs with more expensive homes are right on top of the appearance issues-- don't screw up by using the wrong shade of paint on the garage doors!

My mom's condo HOA is like that, and the people on the board are mostly in their 30s and 40s with real jobs, so they and the management company have done a good job in the past 5+ years keeping the place under control with no BS to the homeowners.

Then that is your board dropping the ball, HO should get a letter asking them to tidy up their yards.

I can't be certain that the homeowner got letters or not, but the yard has been that way for some time now.

Could be what we have here, an owner hasn't lived in his house for over two years, the renters moved out of a year ago. The bushes in the front of his own house were overgrown and small trees growing out of them, his was sent letters.

Turn out it was being foreclosed, he able to stop foreclosure. But asshole didn't cut back trees. The HOA fined him $10 per day for 90 days, still didn't cut back trees and bushes.

Me and a neighbor took care of it ourselves. I cut down the trees and she did the bushes. The trees were no more than three or four inches thick.

Went to the meeting yesterday. It was very nice turnout. Most home owners showed up and signed the petition to get rid of the red curbs as well as the existing board. Out of 5 only one board members showed up, which made it easier for us to vote them down. Another meeting is next Friday in which home owners have asked the management company to come out and have the meeting at the community park rather than wasting our money on some fancy restraunt. Hope for the best and everything goes well.. A pic from meeting, people were actually protesting with signs...LOL.

He said he is there as a home owner but he will definitely bring this issue up with the board in next meeting and also bring them to the community park for the meeting not some restraunt 10 miles away..

Thumbs up Update.

Update! Home owners won!! . Now we have parking on one side. (Better than not having any). But there are one way streets and speed bumps now. But I'll happily trade that for some parking space.

more than likely it'll be bolt in speed bumps. Nothing a drill and some flashlights can't fix in the middle of the night.

Someone I know did this in their neighborhood and turned all of theirs sideways and then dremeled the heads off the bolts so they couldn't be undone. I think the HOA figured out no one cared for them and left it that way...

Wouldn't call that a complete victory, as you will still have red curbs...but congrats on getting the parking

Better than not having any and parking on my front lawn and then getting fined for "ruining" my own property.

Bingo...

Know who shows up to my buildings HOA meeting? In unit with over 100 condos....

NO ONE

A few did in the beginning, and it stopped. The only reason I dont go anymore is because my wife is on the board, so I get all the info anyway.

But yes...decisions are brought up and made, and when people dont care enough to attend meetings and know what is happening in their community...its on them when things are done you dont like.

Know the last time people showed up to one of HOA meetings? It was when notice went out that the monthly dues were increasing...and everyone wanted to come bitch about it.

If these people had come to meetings or understood new construction they would understand that dues increase annually for the first several years to build the reserves...and we had NOT increased the dues for 2 years.

Its amazing to see and hear what kinda of shit people whine and complain about within an HOA...but for the real important stuff, they never show up or make their voice known...at least not until its after the fact and too damn late.

You should have left it and let the fine grow.

He probably wouldnt pay the fine...and Im betting with your CCCs the HOA would have been able to put a lien on his house.

About two weeks before each monthly meeting, my mom's HOA puts up an agenda on the announcement board next to the mailboxes to let everyone know what's to be discussed.

I never felt a need to attend any of the monthly meetings on my mom's behalf though-- just the annual meetings. There is pretty good communication from the board and management company for a building of 25 units or so. With a couple of major decisions requiring $$ and potential special assessments, the board of directors mailed letters to the homeowners to tell them what was being considered before the meetings and decisions as well. Board members also e-mail with limited or urgent issues, too.

The fine can only go for 90 days at $10 per, that's the max allowed by law. House is right next to mine, fine already served, I'm going to keep it looking somewhat clean.
