Bathouse

I'm putting up a bat house in my backyard to attract insect-eating flying mammals. I don't have any mature trees that are large enough to attach it to (my tallest trees are fairly slender river birches), so I'm thinking I'm going to put it up on a post.

I'm a bit concerned that the post will be out in direct sun and it won't really end up being that great a location for the little guys to sleep during the day.

Does anyone out there have a bathouse? Any tips or suggestions on making one successful?

I've looked into this before. They actually prefer a somewhat sunny location. A big problem is all the bat crap that will accumulate under it.

Just for thread crapping, old timers here see it as a badge of honor to shoot a bat, and nail the trophy up outside. Considering the firearms on azine, should spark some interest...

If you could be so lucky as to just have them make home in your chimney. There's about three houses around here that have bats living in the area between the outside brick and liner. I see the bats flying around every night, wish there were more.

If my chimney stack weren't so tall (3 stories up, with 1:1 pitch roof) that would probably be a great place to mount the bathouse.

Why build a bat house when a bat cave is so much cooler?
