I would pass.

The cameras are only 360 lines. That's not even standard definition. Depending on your application, it's highly unlikely 60 feet of cable (for each camera??) is going to be enough. Mine were mounted to the soffits, run through the attic and down into the bonus room, where the DVR sits in the 2nd floor rack. From there, it connects to the LAN and down to my main floor rack.

If you REALLY want cameras, do it right. Consider hiring someone. You can do it yourself, but don't go cheap. You'll be kicking yourself if you get the above.

Bumping this thread instead of starting a new one. Been thinking about going with something like this http://shieldtechsecurity.com/410/ . You install yourself, then you can have them monitor for ~$8/mo or you can just have it self-monitor. This would be in conjunction with some cameras (garage has wired cameras, house would be wireless).

Has anyone used a service like that? Due to the design of our house (no attic, no crawl/basement) we have to go wireless. Shield Tech seems to have decent reviews and are A+ with the BBB (I know that doesn't mean everything)... but just curious if anyone has gone that route...

Beezle, I have had front point security for over 6 months now and I am a happy camper....yes they are a little expensive at 42 bucks a month but all their hardware is working perfectly fine, all the sensors are doing their job well....

I love the app so you can arm and disarm the system once you have left the house....i love the customization options which you get online (including alerts/reminders).....

all in all, I would get FPS again if I had to

Been doing some reading on these install it yourself and we'll monitor it companies. Feedback seems pretty good so far. All I've done over the last couple of months are cameras... but think we may do a couple of motion sensor then have one of these companies monitor it.

How would you compare the pricing of adt and the equipment to FPS. ADT wants about 600 just for the basics installed (1 motion sensor, 4 window/door sensior, touch pad etc.). Just visiting the FPS website once has me interested. It all seems more user friendly.

True....ADT usually has some special going on all year long....

since FPS works on wireless (cellular) network, you can ADD and REMOVE any equipment without wiring and other things....they are pricey....

I paid 650 for FPS for couple motion sensors, 6 door/window sensors, 4 glass break sensors, 2 control panels, smoke and heat sensor and 2 garage door sensors....

installed everything myself, called them and configured everything on the call....

We recently got Xfinity Home Security and I'm pretty satisfied. You get the app where you can arm and disarm as well as control your thermostat, lights, and view your cameras. We have two motion sensors and 6 foor/window sensors. I haven't added thermostat and light control yet. Will be adding a couple of cameras and a heat and smoke at the end of this month. It's 100% wireless and the control unit is a tablet.

+1 on light control and video monitoring...

from what the sales rep @ FPS told me was "you can add video monitoring but in all honesty, by the time you setup couple cameras and set it up, its going to be couple grand. I suggest, you can add camera's yourself and monitor it yourself....that will be the best route for you"

so i went that route....also we did not go with any light control...we are very good with turning the lights off when we leave the room and we have NEST so dont need thermostat control

WOW 15 a month is cheap...

I pay 43 a month for Front Point Security and have been happy customer for over a year now....we had an antenna go bad on us and they shipped us a new one over night...gotta love that kind of service

We have Simplisafe. It works fine for a basic home security system. Never had it go off so I can't talk about the monitoring service and the speed with which authorities are notified and arrive.

Honestly I feel like just having the sign stuck in the flower bed does just as much.

^ It's definitely one of those optional peace of mind thing.

I'm the type that prepares for the worse and hope for the best. On my car I have a two-way Viper alarm, tilt sensor, wheel locks, and LoJack. At least I know in an event of a break in, it'll either deter them from continuing or I'm alerted and can take immediate action.

LOL...that is 1 thing I honestly dont need to find out LOL....

but yeah, when the wifey was pregnant, we were at the hospital for her regular checkup and not sure why my garage door opened by itself (the night before I was adjusting the open and close height of the door)....I got a text that the garage door was open, in the next few seconds a call and they were talking to me while the cops were at the house.

I have a motion sensor hidden in the garage and that did not go off, so I was sure no one was in the garage....but it was good to know the cops were over in a couple minutes and checked everything out....

I went home and checked the garage door and looked like it had some debris in the track which might have forced it to open back up after we left....since then, I sit in the driveway, wait for the door to close and arm the system from my phone...once armed, I drive off

1. Does it let you know it's already disarmed because someone is already home and disarmed it? Or vice versa. You're at work. Can you arm the alarm from far away because your mobile app says it's disarmed?

2. Has it ever lagged on you? Like you pull up to your driveway, disarm it, but you're waiting awhile for your phone to talk to the base station.

3. Does your mobile app require a password to open? Because if I lose my phone, the person picking it up can mess with my alarm system.

4. Do you solely use your mobile app to control your alarm system and not so much the key pad?

1> Yes. I can arm it or disarm it from anywhere. Everytime there is an activity (arm stay/arm away/disarm, I get a text as well) Also I have the system configured to send me a text if I leave a door open for more than 15 minutes and when it closes after that.

2> No sir. No lag. until you have internet connection on your phone it arms/disarms it. Even if you arm from phone, it is set for a 15 second arming delay after which it arms the system.

3> The mobile app can be set to ask for login everytime OR keep you logged in. I have it ask for my passcode everytime.

4> I use the keypad as well. At night while hitting the sack, I usually arm it using the keypad. Also we have a secondary keypad hidden close to where we usually are just incase of an emergency we can hit the button to call the cops/ambulance/etc

Was actually talking to coworkers about this.

It's not an alarm system, but related. If you have a sliding glass door, this will help a lot with security. Apparently thieves can just push into and up on the door, and it'll lift off of the rail, allowing them to slip in (!)

Plus, it's cheap. One part goes on your sliding door, the other goes onto your frame.

lol I do a similar ritual. Sit in my car, login to the app and wait for all systems armed and then I drive off. I have ADT and currently pay at $54/mo...very expensive. Have 1 year left in their damn contract but I bought the equipment. I know I know big mistake going with them! But so far their service has been very good.

So this thread fails to cover CPI at all too or are they just that bad? The house I just bought already has a system wired in it I just need to make a choice on who to have monitor it.

I try to shy away from wired systems...

with the traditional ADT systems, they run of the phone line...the crooks can just cut the line and the system will never contact ADT...

I am guessing all new systems have an inbuilt SIM card and run a battery backup so they are "fool proof"....
