Help with home security

Guys, I live in a condo unit, in the burbs of chicago. Its a brand new building, and we've all been here about 2 years. Unfortunately there have been a couple break-in's, on my floor. On thursday of last week, They hit my neighbour. We have tired everything. Changed the central doorlock, and issued new keys, we've all changed our individual keys, but these are determined crooks, and are breaking the locks. This weekend we got an ADT sales person to come by, and he wants to install the system for 818, and 40 bucks a month. It this a good deal? do any of you have ADT? how is it? Is it worth it? thanks for any advice. I have until tomorrow to cancel the financial transaction.

IMO the monthly monitoring is a waste of money. With a loud enough alarm your everyday crook will be scared away and run fast. Also, the PD usually doesn't "rush over" to your house when ADT alerts them (at least not here in the city). They usually get there "eventually" and check it out. Monthly monitoring fee is ADT's bread and butter.

Cheaper alternative is a nice big dog.

exactly. Loud alarm = neighbors sticking their heads out and opening their doors to see whats going on. Again, no need for monitoring.

If you lived in ahouse in the boonies, it'd be a different story.

this is not true.

in a condo, sure... maybe.

in a house, definately not.

any crook worth 2 cents will have your alarm disabled within 10 seconds of it sounding... this is usually so quick that your neighbors will ignore it... if they even heard it (which in a house is unlikely).
