Garage Flooring Help

My mom wants me to help her fix up the floor in our garage next week when I am home. Right now it is just plain. She bought some "Heavy Duty Strength Behr 1 Part Epoxy Acrilic Concrete and Garage Floor Paint" and on the can it says it resists hot tires. We have it on the floor in our basement and I told her I didn't think it would last. The garage is fairly big, it is a 3 car with a small storage section. I was just wondering what your thoughts are and whether you think the paint would last or whether there are better ways to do this.

I don't have any experience with painting garages, but I know Behr makes good paint. I guess if it's "heavy duty strength" specifically for garage floors it should hold up well.

Epoxy paint that states that it resists tire heat are generally good to go.
No guarantees though. Lay it on thick...if your tire is sitting on an area that had a thin coat, then it will pull up the epoxy finish.

I have an epoxy finish on my garage floor...I have no problems with it at all...an I would never go back to a plain conc. floor again!

EDIT: The work is all in the conc. floor slab prep!!! You must clean it very very very very well. If it is not prepared correctly, your epoxy will not adhere well at all.
If you have oil stains on your garage floor now, I would shy away from epoxy paint. Make sure you follow the prep instructions on cleaning the floor very closely.

I'm off for the 4th of July week, and this is going to be my project. Was about to start my own until I saw this one.

Currently, I'm planning on using this:

Its a little fancier then the Behr paint, but its cost a lot more, thats for sure. Like Moog said, its all in the prep work. If you have a lot of oil stains, its going to be difficult to get it to stick to the floor. You have to use some sort of Acid etch to clean it all up. I've also seen suggestions to get a floor sander and sand down the entire floor so that it feels at least like 150 grit sand paper. Basically, you want to get it to the point where if you put a drop of water on to the floor, it should absorb it almost immediately.

If you have oil stains like I do, I heard of one technique of using a blowtorch to burn off the petroleums embedded in the concrete. Sounds a little out there, but I have some oil stains that have probably been there for quite some time, so I'm going to give this a shot if the acid wash dosent work out.

I think I'm pretty set on the epoxy as opposed to tiles or mats. I'll take some pics when I'm done.

Good thread, our new home will be finished in September and I've been wondering about the best way to seal the garage floor. Fortunately, it will be virgin concrete, so should be a piece o cake.

btw, we've had great experience w/ Behr paints in our current home if that's worth anything.

With the impending housing market crash, you're building a new home?

I am tiling part of my garage. It's the raised part just before you enter the house. I'll post pictures when I'm done (as most of you know!).

Oh, despite my warnings in the housing bubble thread, I'm not long term bearish, but the short term frothiness was written on the wall for everyone.

Smart money buys when others are desparately selling!

I see. So you were working everyone into a frenzy so you could swoop in and snag their properties for a song.

I've actually used the Behr epoxy and it's held up pretty decent in the 3 years i've had it. There are some spots though where the front two tires sit where some of the coating has come off. I did clean the floor and etch it, and then put two coats of it, but looking back maybe a third coat near where the tires sit wouldn't have been a bad idea.
