Garage door won't open!!! Help!

Garage door won't open!!! Help!

When I pushed the button, I can hear the garage door opener going but the door does not open. What can I try.

I unplugged it and it does the same.

any chance you pulled the emergency handle on it? That stops the chain mechanism if I'm not mistaken

If someone pulled the emergency handle it'll diengage the lift rod from the chain (AMHIK). You should be able to get it back on track pretty easily tho'.

or...you should use your the emergency cable and open it to see if the main drive shaft/cable/belt has broke.

My 15+ year old garage door opener died this winter. Turns out it got so cold the roller mechanism slightly froze and then the chain (or belt-I don't remember) broke. Since it was an old unit I went ahead and upgraded the whole system and had a garage dude service the door.

Here's where I learned something important about rolling garage doors:
A garage door needs maintenance.

You should check the roller bushings yearly as they'll wear and age. You should periodically grease the rails.

Inspection and lube is important. I usually have to adjust the tension on the chain every other year on mine (old craftsman).

not even a full month from closing on the house
time for a new one...

It amazes me that we don't get more "my tire is all floppy and squishy and my car is driving really funny" threads on here sometimes, given the threads we do get. Maybe they're all in Car Talk though...

Henry, looks like a plastic gear just got chewed up ??

Maybe look into just replacing the gear ??

I'm cheap, so I like to look for the cheap fixes first, but it's not that much to replace the whole unit I guess...

I'm going to check it out again when I get back tomorrow...if its an easy fix, I might just use that one on my other garage door...at a later date

Now I've gotta decide if I want a belt or screw opener...

Get the screw type. Worth the extra $$. Very quiet and smooth..

Actually...ended up getting a Craftsman screw drive opener... Too bad they're not the same length as the old chain drive I had

Time to drill more holes in my ceiling
