Electric Meter Seal

Last week the main breaker in my electrical panel failed. I had an electrician come out and replace it. In the process he cut the meter seal and pulled the meter so he could work on the box.

I didn't realize that these things were sealed until after he left and I noticed that the tag was cut.

Do I need to call JCP&L and tell them to replace the seal? Will they give me twenty lashes?

im confused... the meter is outside? the main breaker is in your panel box inside... why did he have to go into the meter to change a breaker in the panel?

or did he cut the power so he wouldn't juice himself changing the breaker?

i'd call JCPL and if they give you hell direct them to said electrician...

The way the main breaker is installed in my panel is that it can't be pulled out without unscrewing it from the main lines coming into the box. He didn't want to fry himself so he pulled the meter to take power away from the panel. I guess I will give JCP&L and see what they say.

From somebody who works for a power company, I'd throw out the cut seal and call them and tell them that its missing. Its not a big deal, we run across them all the time. They're just going to pull the faceplate, make sure you're not tampering and put a new seal on.

litesout, just curious.... why make up a story instead of just telling the power company exactly what was done?

agree with mike.. its not like the OP did it himself... if they fine him or there are any repercussions, I'd direct them to the electrician...

Different utilities and municipalities have different rules about what kind of electrical work requires permits and inspections and what doesn't. What the electrician did in this case would be fine with the utility I work for. But when I replaced the main at my sister's house FP&L had a fit when I told them they needed to come and reseal the meter can and threatened to have the service cut until we produced a permit and county inspection. They even sent a truck to the house. I was still there and after talking to the tech he didn't cut it. He even told me it would've been easier had we never called and just left the meter reader to find the base unsealed.
