Gathering quotes from installers. I know that some installers charge between $2-$4 per sq foot and demolition of tile can be around $1 per. What's a typical price for grout and any other materials needed? 730 square feet total.

 

Cost of grout depends on the size of tile. Cost of mortar is pretty low, I'd say ~$25 per 75 sq ft so count on ~$0.30/sqft or so depending on what type of mortar you need. That price to install seems pretty bang on. Don't cheap out though, go with the guys that have good reviews. I've heard lots of horror stories with going with the cheap guys.

 

Or they quoting laying it on blue-board, cement board or 1" of concrete?

 

Tile is 24x24. Laying it on Thinset.

 

You won't go through that much grout with tiles that big though it will take far longer for the thinset to dry as a result of such a big tile, something to be very aware of. Do you have a concrete subfloor where you're installing the tile?

 

I'm pretty sure but there's tile to demolish now. Most houses have concrete under the tile.

 

Tile would be $1-10 sq ft. You can get a lot for $5 sqft, $750-3750. Cement board is $12 per 3x5, or 50 pieces =$600, $50 for cement board screws.

maybe 15 bags of mortar and 6-10 bags of grout. My grout was $30 per 10 lb bag= $300, i forget the cost of mortar but i'll say $10 per bag = $150.

I would say about $5000 plus 10% if you went with $5 tile.

 

Ours was about $2 sqft. We checked out tile stores and lowes. Lowes had the style we liked and the price was right.

I have wood subfloor under my upstairs tile so cement board is required.

Mortar is more like $20-$25 a 50lb bag but you're not far off. If he's installing on concrete then the cement board and screws aren't needed.

Agree that $10/sqft for tile is really expensive.

 

A couple of quotes are like $3,500.

The guy we're going with:
- Pick up tile from store
- demolish and throw away old tile
- install 730 sq ft new tile
- all materials
- install 150 ft of baseboards

Another guy is quoting $3,200 but missing things:

- demolish and throw away old tile
- install 730 sq ft new tile
- install 150 ft of baseboards
- No delivery quote nor cost of materials

I had some other dude quote $5,200. Didn't bother calling him back.

 

Seconded that $10 for tile is a lot.. I got some nice porcelain tile for ~2.59 a square foot recently.

 

A tile guy that also installs baseboards? That`s pretty nice. Usually those are two separate jobs.

 

We are getting rectified porcelain 30x30 for $2.69/sq ft. I have friends that have travertine and marble and regret it because of the maintenance. But even the nicest marble I've seen is no more than $5.XX per.

Pretty common here but they charge like $2 per ft. I was recommended a carpenter for $1 per and he's excellent.

 

Yeah natural stone needs sealing and all that jazz... pass!

 

I`ll never do marble again for that reason. It really does have high maintenance but it does look really good. Put Limestone in a Master bath floor a long time ago and still looks great.

For South Florida the land of tiled floors the porcelain is perfect.

Looks like 1/16 grout lines. Using an unsanded grout should be good to go.

 

I was quoted around $5500 for my old house. 796 sq ft, just the living space.

That was with removal, install, and baseboards.

My uncle does flooring for a living. But lives in STL. I flew him out for $300 bucks gave him $200 bucks for spending money for the 3 days that he was out here. Stayed at my parents house.

Material costed me $2200. May end up doing that again for the new house...

 

Where is a good place to buy tile? Big box stores like Lowe's or Home Depot?

 

Thin grout lines or wider? If thin (1/8" or less), go with the tile stores. If wider (more than 1/8"), you're ok with the big box stores. What you get with the tile store is consistency which is what you need for narrow grout lines. The big box stores would have less consistent lengths and straightness at a higher price, the big box ones have more loose controls and therefore a lower price.

That price is high IMO. If the same guy did my baseboards I was quoted $3,300 but then again I'm in Miami.

Do you have Floor & Decor. Much better selection than Home Depot and Lowe's. Those two stores had nothing we liked. Tile stores all the way. Ask friends/family where they got theirs.

Dang you move fast. We have a lot of different warehouse areas throughout the county. Flooring, kitchen, etc. Home improvement is HUGE here.

 

We have a Floor & Decor store about 45 minutes away, i'll have to go take a look. Home Depot and Lowes selection isn't that great

 

Not sure if I should keep posting here and rename the thread (mod?) but a week in and I got some more work that needs to be done. Our french door is pretty rotted. I'd like to upgrade to a hurricane impact door but I'm thinking like $2,000 because double doors. Plus the labor of changing the framing. Plus I got those extra little side windows next to it.

Also I need to reinstall my toilet in my half bath and do the plumbing for the new vanity that we bought. I don't know shit about plumbing but my bro-in-law might be able to help.

Toilet replacement is a piece of cake, I'd DIY that one no problem. Depending on what the plumbing looks like for your vanity, I'd probably DIY that too. Youtube is your friend.

I've looked everywhere, We are going with floor and decor for the tile.

 

What did you go with?

Just spent a week off from work in the new house and holy shit I'm exhausted. Had to rebuild some furniture that got taken apart, build the closet which was a nice learning experience, install a new light fixture that had screws that wouldn't move, pressure clean the yard and driveway (fucker wouldn't start), replace light switches (my fingers hurt from yanking out the wires out of the old switches) and many other details that eat into time. The house is coming out great, the internet works fine throughout the house as well as the satellite. I don't want to see a contractor for a while but my floor guy needs to come back and finish one thing he missed.

 

In the kitchen I went with the a 3x9 glass tile.

I already had tile for the floor leftover from my dad's renovation...a wood look, light grey tile. For the shower I went with a 6x12 glass tile for the shower, with a mixed size glass for an accent wall.

A few things:

Nobody's been using the 2nd full bathroom so I hadn't addressed the clogged sink and smell that started coming in after the paint smell went away. Well after dumping an entire bottle of Drano which was a waste, I shined a light down the drain (no drain covers in this house ) and saw some crap down there. Grabbed my long needle nose pliers and pulled out a water bottle cap and toothbrush Went to bed because the smell had gone away but I smelled it again this morning. I've looked everywhere so I'm getting worried it's in the wall. It's not a dead animal smell but is initially repugnant but then goes away. We did a full inspection when we bought the house and even though all the rooms had Damprid in them, he didn't detect any mold or anything. Ideas?

I'd like to organize my tools in the garage. I don't have a lot but I imagine this will continue to grow. I was thinking about a pegboard with hooks. I already have a shelving system in there that I can use for other items. Plus I'd like to hang long items like brooms, mops, etc. Any ideas for those? I'll post a pic of the garage if needed.

Last week I swapped out several plugs and plates to newer white ones for a nice clean look. Unfortunately the porch lights no matter how I wire them won't turn on. The switch has one normal vertical toggle for the interior light over the front door which also is controlled by a switch on top of the stairs (designed for walking up the stairs at night so you don't trip). To the right of the vertical toggle are 2 horizontal toggles. Prior to the change the bottom toggle would flip on the spot light (with a sensor) over the garage. The top toggle assume was for the porch light but I don't recall it ever working and I think the fixture is fucked because the bulb works fine as I tested it. After changing the toggle, the damn porch and spot lights won't turn on and I tried every possible combination of connecting the hot and feed lines to the 2 horizontal toggles. I even tested another vertical toggle I had lying around and nothing. Really hate electrical work
