Dishwasher rant

So time to replace the old dishwasher.

I make my decision, select a very nice (pretty much top o the line) KitchenAid.

I get the dishwasher home...yank the old one out, begin to install the new one.

I notice that the dishwasher "frame" seems a bit odd. Looking more closely, I realize that a very heavy gauge corner bracket it bent. Not bent from being dropped, but as if it was bent at the factory, and then forced into position, and then riveted to the frame!!!!!!!!!

As a result the front door mechanism does not open and close well at all.
Sux to be me. I repack the the dishwasher, back into the box....take it back to the store and return it. No hassle there, but they have no stock on hand for another.....so I gotta wait until Tuesday (tomorrow).

You say tomorrow is not that bad.......but this all went down the day before thanksgiving....went through thanksgiving with no dishwasher

Hope the new one tomorrow is not a "friday afternoon dishwasher".

....and seriously now, who hardwires their dishwashers anymore?!?!?
Would it be that hard to include a standard plug with the dishwasher?!?!

Dishwasher does not have to be hardwired per code....unless your state requires it....not in California, we plug them in...unless your house is ancient.

It's code around here -- if the appliance is permanently installed it's got to be hard wired.

We don't consider them permanent out here....they fail too often

It's true for ovens and the like, but 1 or 2 screws to the bottom of the countertop while the rest of the unit just sits on the floor is not considered permanent out here in the crazy West.

The whole Kitchen Aid/Maytag/Whirlpool conglomerate has gone to hell. I bought a Whirlpool gold fridge and had to "lemon" it after it ruined all of my food 4 times, and of course no re-imbursement for all that food either! Apparently the "foam insulation" had gaps inside allowing for ice-buildup thus blocking the vents...

Interesting. The only "installed" appliance in my kitchen that plugs in is the hood microwave, and it's still on a dedicated breaker with the plug accessible in the cabinet above it.

Anything installed below counter level or in a cabinet has to be hard-wired.

Standard refrigerators are on rollers, not installed, so they plug in. A custom cabinet-installed fridge would be hard wired though.

That sucks! I installed new appliances for my mom in a house she bought and they all included plugs (dish washer, refrigerator which is standard, range hood, and stove but it was gas but the electric ones just plugged in too).

Of course! This isn't New Jersey.

And California is known by the State of Illinois to be a nanny state.

Our problem is more likely the overly powerful electrician's union.

My dishwasher, garbage disposal, electric stove, and hood microwave all plug in.

FWIW, an appliance power cable isn't all that expensive. Had to buy one when I replaced my dishwasher.

1.5 years of use out of the mid-grade Maytag dishwasher I bought and so far it's been great.

I'd thought about doing that but didn't. I had to have a new power cable! My dishwasher functions much better because of it. lol

UPDATE:

Installed the new dishwasher last night with success.

Boy is this dishwasher whisper quiet!
The wash cycle is bizzare....kinda like how the front load washing machines operate....it seems like it cycles/washes for a bit, drains a little, washes a bit more, drains a bit more....rather interesting.

Dishes and glasses came out absolutely perfect.
Integrated food grinder in the dishwasher is a must! Pretty much throw your plates in "as is"....and all the food goes away in the wash. No filters to clog, no food ending up in your glasses, no need to "clean" your plates before you put them in the dishwasher.

what model did you get? My bro and I are looking at a new one for the condo because the current one is loud as hell. Emphasis on quiet is important.

^^ The one I have is rated at 50db.

If sound is your main concern, just look at each models sound rating.....most models post this in the specs.

I'd be interested to see how this turns out in a year or so. A good family friend as well as my fiancée's aunt & uncle have dishwashers that you're supposed to be able to do this with and they have problems with the water jets getting clogged from time to time.

I don't know the specifics (make or model of either), but I don't think either have a Kitchen Aid.

There are plenty of 's in Cali...hire one?

And yeah, dishwashers are a PIA. The house came with a PoS Frigidaire which has since broke. We'll buy a new one soon...

I have a couple of family members with KitchenAid dishwashers w/ food grinders....one of them is over 5 years old. They still throw the dishes in 'as-is" and works like a champ. No issues.

I may be mistaken, but KitchenAid is owned by Whirlpool...so, I believe you're getting essentially the same machine. Just cosmetically different...?

From a quick Google search, it looks like KitchenAid is a brand under Whirlpool.

Yes and no.

Whirlpool corp "is" or "can be":
Amana, KitchenAid, Maytag, Jenn-Air, Inglis, Admiral, Magic Chef, Ikea, Kenmore, Thermadore.

but wait...there's more!!!

....for example LG makes some refrigerators for Kenmore, while Sanyo makes some Kenmore freezers...while at the same time Whirlpool makes some refrigerators for Kenmore.....Electrolux also makes many appliances under the Kenmore name as well.

....BSH makes Bosch & Thermadore....Thermadore makes Viking refrigerators.

What I'm getting at is you really don't know (without research) who really makes your brand of appliance.

Well, if the dishwasher is anything like my KitchenAid Mixer

I'm usually all over the board when it comes to appliances.
I'm no brand loyalist, however, I do have some brands that I won't touch.

I came close to pulling the trigger on a Samsung dishwasher, but they did not offers some of the features I wanted. I did find the Samsung washer interiors to be top-notch, however.

^ Yeah...I will never own a Frigidaire product if I can help it. Too bad it came with the show home.

But, it's toast now...so, I get to buy one. Probably look towards Boxing Week or something.
