Finished up the closets last night and while it isn't an ideal layout, it was so nice to get rid of the old, paint sprayed wire shelving. I still need to run a bead of caulk around the ceiling edge, to fix the popcorn edge remains but they are pretty much done. My wife was kind enough to unpack boxes of clothes I clearly don't wear (they've been in boxes for months) and hang them up so that's why they look wrinkled to hell. We ended up buying Ikea Pax organizers, pretty flexible in terms of options and we kept it under $1,000 I believe.

No POPCORN!

Right closet. I'm going to put my stuff in the office closet so she can have both, since they aren't huge closets.

Left closet

Other than making ceiling lines easy to mask, it does function as an acoustic ceiling. Other than being doped with asbestos, it did a good job at keeping sound from reverberating through the home. I know several audiophiles who prefer to keep their popcorn ceiling for this reason.

As long as it wasn't painted over and post-74ish.. it's actually really easy to remove. You can always check for asbestos with a kit. I wouldn't suggest doing that yourself. Hire a team to seal and dump, that's why you should do that shit before you move in.

Then tell those audiophiles to go fuck themselves in a studio.

Exactly what I did. Lord the mess that causes. We did floors, popcorn, paint before a single piece of furniture entered the house.

Funny you guys ask, as I was taking it down I was thinking about who came up with popcorn and how goddamn good he was as a salesperson because it took over. I assume the dry wall guys were all for it and while it might help for sound, I feel I see it more in old ranchers and houses with low ceiling versus massive houses, where echo could be a problem but what do I know.

Shower still isn't done, got busy this weekend and ended up fishing; gorgeous Sunday out on the water. I did spend a few hours cleaning out a flower bed behind the house and building a new brick edging. It had a bunch of junk in it, broken cement from the kitchen and a ton of junk the previous owners threw there and ended up getting buried.

Not really bad to remove at all but the mess is insane, def wish we could have done it before move in. I think I'm going to try and remove it from the office ceiling this week, I'll take some pics. Luckily, I'm saving the flooring for last so I'm not real worried about it but the dust is crazy. I spray it with some water, let it sit a few minutes and scrap it off. It seems the pros absolutely soak it for what I assume to be easier removal and less dust but they all want to do a knock down vs the smooth finish. It seems the more water I use, the more damage I cause, which explains the knockdown they seem to do. I'm pretty careful so I only have a few divets and maybe a little drywall tape I need to skim and sand; much prefer the smooth ceiling after all the work to remove and repaint.

I will say it transforms the rooms. I've never lived in a place with popcorn so I didn't realize how it dated a place and how dingy it looks, definitely worth the effort.

I've done backsplashes and floors but the shower is kicking my ass, time wise, probably 60 plus hours in it. Since I need a good 4-6 hours to work on it, I usually spend one weekend day doing it and I'm getting there. Through out the week, I do other projects at night, like below.

Shower updates:

Wanted to try something different and while not a huge fan of fruit beers, this wasn't bad.

Added some grasses along the front walk (needs to be power washed but the weird coating it has starts to peel and it looks worse, need to paver it).

Built this bed in the back. There was tons of debris in here, lots of rocks, buried bottles, etc. The stucco was also failing a bit so I power washed it, repaired, sealed and then added soil, mulch and plants.

Popcorn in what we hope to be the nursery. This shit has a way of dating a place and this "new" floor the seller installed didn't help. Plan is to put a light carpet in here, despite me not liking carpet...Ceiling wasn't too bad, had to skim maybe half, has 3 coats of paint but then I saw an area that looked uneven so I want to put on another. I've scrapped the random shitty old paint drips jobs off the walls, skimmed the rough areas, sanded and it's ready for paint. Still need to put a new door on the room and closets plus new carpet and baseboards.

Couple better pics of the kitchen, we need a floor badly The kitchen and living room is the one area that has knock down walls, I wanted to skim and sand to make them flat but the hall made such a mess, we're going to skip it. That meant that where we removed the old cabinets and replaced two sheets of drywall, needed the texture. I tried the super expensive can stuff but needed up buying a hopper and sprayed it yesterday, came out well.

I do have a trim piece for the beverage fridge, waiting to do the floor.

Always wanted a pull out for recycling, handle location isn't ideal but it works.

Figured we would get in the Christmas spirit

Finally, a quick trip to the keys to get away from work and the house and celebrate our 5 years marriage.

Floors aren't bad but man, all the angles and such are killing me in here. I have two more baths to tile but nothing this complicated.

Was indeed beer

I was going to use red guard but read a lot of people like Aquadefense and Lowes had it in stock so I went with it. Easy to apply, pretty strong odor but I believe they both smell so...

I've heard great things about Kerdi board so when this (I think it's that one but there are a ton) was on clearance for $125, I grabbed it to convert the other tub downstairs, into a shower. I may have linked the wrong one but it's basically a system that fits in place of a tub and allows you to tile right over the backing, without water proofing. It was an impulse buy that is in the attic so I haven't researched it much but I believe I can skip the waterproof/odor.

Thanks man. I spent a bit over five hours tiling last night and finished a bit, just have eight half tiles plus caulk and grout for this long ass project to be done. I just need to get a glass guy for the shower, relocate the drain for one vanity to the back, re-drywall the area, paint the room, finish some baseboards, put another vanity in, new curtain, and I'm done.

Sourced a divider that I was missing on the side of the fridge ($30 vs $350 I was refusing to pay) so I want to get that in, finish painting the de-popcorned room, and hopefully get another cabinet for the missing one in the kitchen. Then I'm going to work on painting the whole downstairs, tiling the backsplash, adding crown molding to the island, and then on to painting the outside and then finally, tiling the downstairs.

Daaaaamn. The amount of money you are saving by doing this yourself is ridiculous! That tiling work looks like a total PITA. What's with the doorstop looking things between each tile? I am guessing spacers, but I have never seen them look like doorstops.

We really couldn't afford all of this, if we had to pay some South Florida GC and it's a good way to relax, keeps your mind off work and stress.

Door stop thing keeps large tiles level to each other. Large format tiles aren't completely flat and have a higher spot in the middle, which can result in lippage. EVERYONE told me not to do large tiles myself because I would mess them up and without this system, I'm sure they're correct but with them, it's so easy.

There are a few different systems but here's the one I went with and I highly recommend it.

it acts as a spacer for grout lines, but doesn't cause an adhesion issue for the tile to the substrate. I used them all over my house when I did my tile work.

They snap off below the tile surface, so they are basically buried in grout. I haven't seen any signs of grout cracking, it all looks and feels very solid.

I was worried about leaving them as well but I've learned a lot of tile guys use them and swear by them. I had one floor tile that sounded hollow so I broke it and pulled it up last night, that clip was buried in the thin set and didn't seem to make a difference in adhesion.

Majority of the master is finally done. I still need to work on the edges on the entrance to the shower (wife wanted grout not silver edging, not loving it), get glass put in, get some mirrors, CLEAN the floor, and replace the curtain. I'd like to repaint the crown as well but in time.

Need new entrance doors

Initially we bought a gray vanity but we decided we wanted gray walls and white vanities, much better. Had a rain shower head but noticed it was getting cold. Our hot water heater is four years old and didn't have issues but figured I would change the elements and thermostats, no real change so we got a new shower head.

Had to reroute the plumbing from the side to the back and decided to hardwire a make mirror for my wife.

Here's the color of the old vanity, which is going upstairs and we'll replace this with white as well.

Haven't painted this room gray because after replacing the ceiling, ceiling fan, light, and toilet, the ceiling fucking started to leak

Finished removing the popcorn, painting the walls and ceiling in the office/nursery area but have't decided on a carpet. I spent probably 4 hours prepping the walls, not sure what the fuck they did to them. We also painted the ugly orangish guest bath white, despite wanting to tear it out and replaced the door. I suck at finishing slab doors so I haven't done the office one, despite how much better it looks. I replaced the hinges and handle but...

Looking good.
I'd like to just rip out our Jacuzzi tub & extend the shower, would triple the shower space over the moderate sized stall we have now. But we also have a large frosted window over the tub, so waterproofing would be fun.

Thanks, 3.5 year old roof. Apparently, no one can do a roof in Florida and despite our warranty from the roofer at closing, to repair this for another 7 years, he's gone dark. Estimates are varying but at least $5k to fix, probably more.

Thanks man, our shower is tiny so I feel your pain but would water proofing be that bad? Concrete backer and some paint on water proofing, no? My big worry would be the pan but I think you could do that.

I'd like to just rip out our Jacuzzi tub & extend the shower, would triple the shower space over the moderate sized stall we have now. But we also have a large frosted window over the tub, so waterproofing would be fun.
