Claening oil stain from driveway

Had a friend over and their car spewed oil in a nice puddle and stream all over my driveway. They tried to help and get it off using simple green, and it didn;t work. Now I have a huge stain on my otherwise spotless driveway and it is driving me crazy. What do I need to do to get the stain out?

Speedy-dry, its like kitty litter, put it over the spill on a day you know its not going to rain, let it sit for a day or two then sweep it up. If that doesn't take care of all of it, you can try twisting your feet while walking over the spill with the speedy dry on it and it will remove the stain, but that may put swirl marks on the drive way. They also make special detergent type cleaners designed to clean garage floors, simply apply, brush for a few minutes then wash it off with water.

I feel your pain. This past fall, 2 days before I was going to sealcoat the drive, my 4 year boy old decided to dump diesel fuel out of a container (onto the driveway!!) while my wife was busy getting our daughter out of the car.

<--- was NOT happy when he came home from work that day. But it's partially my fault because he should not have been able to access the container. It has since been relocated.

If you have a buddy with a pressure washer, now may be a good time to ask to borrow it for a bit. You can run simple green through the PW with much better results than just pouring it on the stain.

This link may also help.

Good Luck!

Is the driveway concrete or brick pavers?

Just remembered to clarify this. It is concrete, with the top layer "washed," so that the little stones come through.

Removing the fresh stain from the driveway will require a regular scrub brush, some liquid dish soap and water. All you need to do is squirt some liquid dish soap onto the stain and add some water. Be sure to wet down the surrounding concrete as well. This will prevent oil released during the cleaning process from causing a secondary stain. Scrub the stain vigorously and add enough water to make a rich lather of soap.

The soap will emulsify the oil and lift it out of the concrete. If you simply rinse the driveway the oil will pollute your yard or street. You may decide it is more environmentally responsible to blot up a majority of the dirty soap mixture with paper towels or a dry compound like cat litter and dispose of this in a certified landfill. There is a good chance your local waste collection service can accomplish this task for you.

I'd personally be embarrassed if my driveway didn't have oil stains on it

I've heard great things about this as well. In fact, my neighbor swears by it.

I've personally used Muratic Acid on the small spots we've had and it has removed them no problem....

Does the acid stain the concrete though?

^ No, I've never had a problem with it. I pour a little bit on the stain, use a brush to scrub, then hose off. So far so good. I've done this on our driveway as well as our pool decking to remove stains and it's been fine every time...

Start with the mildest solution (soap) then work up to acid.

Note: straight muriatic acid will etch the concrete and potentially make it look different than the rest of the driveway.

I used it to etch the garage floor before I put my epoxy coating down.
