So what's hard about sealing the countertops? Once a year seems ok to me. Plus I love the fresh gloss look. I use a three step system from Dupont's StoneTech line.
to me its all about the time... I use Dupont also...
i'm not saying that it is difficult to do, but then you can't use the kitchen until after the sealant cures... that can be a day or two, and like I said before, my wife cooks every day...
I must be getting older because i'm starting to value my time a lot more... if I can buy something that has less maintenance in the long run, I consider the premium... another good example is Trex decking that I don't have to spend a few hours every few years to seal...
Only problem I've seen with the fake decking is there is some algae that really likes it, so it's not maintenance free. I don't bother sealing my deck (PT Pine) -- I just power wash it every year. I'd have to do the same with Trex. It's still fine after 15 years.
It's funny because I showed some pics to my buddy at lunch and he said white cabinets would look good as well
I will start looking into that and see what I come up with, my buddy has a really nice white picked out to do the trim, so I will see if I like that. Also, The 2 tone I will be doing is this gray with a tan called "Sand Dune" Not sure what Mikey was referring to with the 2 grays. The rest of the paint should be going up tonight, more pics tomorrow!
So did you pick those colors because the painter friend painted a hotel and had paint left over? Or did you find the scheme at a hotel and liked it?
He's a professional painter and recommended them. He painted apartment complexes and those colors were picked out by an interior decorator. He had both of the paints leftover so he showed me the colors in that pic and I liked them which saved me a bunch of money on paint.
No doubt, it was also nice to see what the colors would look like before painting so I knew what I was getting. No more period red and pee yellow Ronald McDonald colors in my kitchen!
After he cut in with the brush, he then used a small hand roller to roll all the brush strokes, then he painted over again with a 12" roller IMG_20141118_205627_zpsm9crtri3.jpg

Paint is dry and curing currently, tonight I will finish cleaning up, screw all the outlets in completely, put the covers on, and take some after pictures as I start to put the kitchen back together.
I really wanted to put up a little counter or breakfast bar there, but it just wasn't in the cards right now. Getting rid of Ronald McDonald was priority number 1
I said the same thing. Then I ended up just painting them. Since it's not much area to have to work on it wasn't that bad. I ended up scuffing it up as good as I could then primer/painted them white. But chalk paint can work well with little to no prep.
We talked about painting the marble, but I have it in every room. And with the blinds down, you barely see it anyway.
I've got those same ones all throughout the house too. They don't look bad, and you really don't see them with the blinds down. In the house we used to rent all the sills were wood and they definitely didn't fare as well over the years as marble. Given the choice, I'd go marble every time.
So, I didn't get a lot done last night, I was super tired from 3 days of little sleep and hard labor. I did screw down all of the outlets, and install new LED recessed lighting. Here's a few pics.

Yeah, it's more of a lighting thing honestly... I don't think they look as bad now that the paint is dry. I definitely want to replace the vent hood, fridge and stove with something newer, probably in the spring. If the cabinets get refinished that will be in the spring as well.

Yeah, they're original and definitely a nice wood. I just can't decide what color/stain I would want to go with.
Looks so much better and yeah, the paint plus new lights make the cabinets look so much better. I think you could get away with some new hardware to update it, until you have the time/money to refinish.
New hardware and a new hood would really finish it off IMO.

I agree, new hardware and a new hood would go a long way to update the space. At most, I'd change the cabinet doors. The boxes look like they're in good shape. The new colors look great! And I dig the LED lights.
So, bought the new cabinet at Sam's club, and on the flatbed cart it was too tall to fit out either of the exit doors, so we had to tilt it twice to get it through the doors, and just barely were able to squeeze it into my parents van. The SOB weighs 188 lbs, my dad and I couldn't get up the hill to get to the back of my house, and couldn't move it all by ourselves so we ended up backing into my garage and unloading it there until I can get more people to help move it. Here's the only teaser you get for now, you can see how big the box is compared to the car, also my dog in there for size comparison, he wanted to check out the box.
