Is an air gap in the kitchen sink necessary for the dishwasher?

I'm redoing my kitchen - I just bought a new faucet set, but nobody seems to sell them with the air gap, and you have to buy it separately.
Right now my dishwasher is hooked up to the garbage disposal and the air gap on the sink.
When I replace my counter/sink/faucets, can I just hook up the dishwasher directly into the garbage disposal and leave it at that? Or is the sink-mounted air gap an absolute necessity?
I could reinstall the one I already have in there for now, but if they don't need to make another hole in the granite, I'd rather they didn't.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Unless you live in BumF--k it is probably required by the building code.

I'm pretty sure there are some ways around this, though it probably depends on the appliances you are using. Make sure the specs of the dishwasher and disposal allow for it.

Isn't what you're talking more for water over flow than air? I thought it was there in case the drain clogged to the dishwaher, that this would allow the water to drain into the sink.

I'm no plumber but I think you always have to have one.

Yeah after speaking to the contractor, I decided to go ahead and get it anyway. $35 for a piece of stainless steel and plastic piping seems like a ripoff

BTW - even though I still think there are ways around it, I had to repair mine yesterday. The old hose from the air gap to the disposal was getting pinched, so it would always overflow into the sink. The main problem was that there was also a real gap at the sink and water was leaking into the cabinet underneath. After replacing the hose, the water is no longer seen and no more leaks.

I just went through the same crap during a new countertop/sink/faucet install. Old dishwasher has been vented into disposal for at least 20 years without problems.

We went with only one hole in the counter for the faucet only. It was a pita finding a one hole sink but it looks great. Dishwasher still vented as before. We are not planning to move anytime sone so code was not a concern. I was also told that if necessary, an additional hole can be drilled.
