Woman Sheds 170 Pounds With 'Backwards Diet'
Tricia Cunningham's Secret: Switch Breakfast And Dinner

UPDATED: 7:55 am CDT May 3, 2005

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Tricia Cunningham used to be overweight. She has lost nearly half her weight in one pretty bizarre diet she calls "the backwards diet."

With her diet, you can eat, enjoy life, and lose weight without Atkins or South Beach diets, and counting points or enrolling in expensive programs, reported WPBF-TV in West Palm Beach.

Tricia Cunningham lost 172 pounds with a plan she calls "the backwards diet."

"If I can do it, anyone can do it," said Cunningham. "I tipped out at a maximum weight of 292 pounds. My joints and back would hurt. Even the vehicles I drove had to be bigger, because I was bigger."

Cunningham has lost a whopping 172 pounds with her diet. She now weighs 125 and just came in second in a bikini contest.

"I woke up one morning, and looked in the mirror and said, 'this is it,'" she said.

Cunninham likes vegetables, fruit and fish, but she didn't want to starve herself or turn vegetarian, so she cooked up a plan.

Her secret is, admittedly, a little weird: Eat what you would normally eat for dinner for breakfast.

Cunningham cooks salmon, cod, or any protein she wants in a marinade of orange juice every morning.

She also likes to dump any vegetable she has into a saucepan and crack two eggs over them, making a veggie soufflé.

For dinner -- you guessed it -- she eats breakfast. Usually she eats oatmeal with shredded wheat in orange juice, not milk.

Cunningham also eats up to five cloves of garlic a day to boost her metabolism.

Her favorite drink is lemon water -- she swears by it.

On this backwards diet, Cunningham went from a size 22 to a size 1 in nine months. She has kept the weight off for more than five years.

Right, that is almost 5 lbs/week - 2 lbs per week is a good average for weight loss. Maybe she was also on the meth for breakfast/crack for dinner diet.

Everyone knows you should eat heavier in the day & lighter in the evening...

But nobody does it.

That's why we're all fat asses.

Define heavier and lighter - I eat the same size meals throughout the day and do fine. Might eat a bigger breakfast or bigger post-workout meal, but that is the main difference. I think many people are fat asses because not many people exercise and eat like shit in general.

The problem is that most people eat heavier in the day and heavier at night too

You would love all the people in my office. They all complain about being overweight and most eat like total ass and don't exercise and others barely eat anything, which is almost as bad as eating like shit. I eat clean food all day, 6-7 times a day and they call me crazy. Yet I am not a lard bucket like most other in my office. It's not rocket science, but more a decision to want to live a certain lifestyle. I tell them what I do and they say that it's too hard and they don't have enough will power. I tell them THEY are the crazy ones.

There is a fat lad in my office that actually seems very proud to be known as the Candy Lady. Her cubicle looks like it's halloween every sinle day. Big bowls of chocolate and candy everywhere on her desk. Keep in mind this is at a health insurance company too.

Everybody that works near me is always going to her cube when they feel the slightest bit hungry. They get excited when someone leaves donuts in the breakroom. Meanwhile I come in with my brown bag with grapes and no-fat pretzels and juice to get me through the day, and they wonder how I can resist all the goodies.

damn sheep.... baaaaaa

That's actually referred to as an eataing disorder...... she's hooked on the metabolic excitement of easily synthesized sugar. Take her away from her sugar for a few days and watch her turn into a raving maniac.

Actually, the diet referenced at the outset adheres to the old rule of eating breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. Works for me; I shed 25 pounds of unnecessary weight by reversing the balance of my intake.

Right ric, most people don't eat breakfast and fail to realize that the point of the meal is to break the 8 hour fast you have just gone through while sleeping. Eating in the morning is critical. My wife used to never eat breakfast and now she has a bowl of cereal every morning, which is enough for her.

Although I don't decrease the sizes of my meals as the day progresses, I could see how the average person could benefit from that greatly, esp if they are used to eating a king-size meal at night.

It also provides you with a huge start for the expenditure of energy through the day. Your approach, which is sort of a "just in time maintenance fuel" methodology works well as well. But the worst is to load up at dinner then fall asleep - goes straight to your waistline.

Eating a big breakfast requires waking up early, and taking the time. Was a major retraining exercise for me.

Right - both eating philosohies make sense, more sense than eating 3 huge meals per day, esp before going to bed. I would normally eat a slightly larger breakfast for reasons you mentioned and then make the subsequent meals the same size, at least on my current plan. When I try to add mass later, I will have to adjust that.

See, the thing is that no matter if you eat oats, yams, brown rice, etc your body is going to break that food down into glucose, regardless of the time. Same goes with proteins foods and amino acids. I am pissed that this even got any play. Must have been a slow news day.

Its a well known fact that your later meals should be smaller. Breakfast should be your biggest meal because its when you need the most energy.

You need more fruits and veggies, and yes, carbs too. Your brain needs carbs. Dont buy the low-carb hype, its not healthy in the long run.

You might lose weight or fat on that diet, but you'll also lose muscle and it won't help long term.

I didn't want to be the first to nag, but that is not much food per day. His metabolism is going to slow down in response most likely.

I snack 2-3 times a day with fruit, veggies and a Slim Fast bar or something around 100 calories. Once I get to my goal weight (20 more lbs to go) then I will be eating better.

I also joined a gym today. New York Sports Club. 1 year membership at $69 a month (ouch).

If you joined a gym and plan on lifting at all, you will need carbs even more than you do now.

Reverse diet, its plausible, but not practical. Who the heck has time to cook a big ass meal in the morning?
