thanks for all the great insights Whiskers!
I have a question, I recently loss 30lbs in approx. 3 months (was 18X in Jan, 160 currently) by doing an hour of cardio everyday and eating healthy (no calorie counting for me ) and I mostly feel great but I do feel really cold sometimes, (I've always been this way, but its much more noticable now). For example, to keep warm, i have to wear twice as many layers as everyone else lol. I've read that its normal to feel colder because of losing a lot of fat in a short amount of time.. I was just wondering if you went through a similar phase. Sorry for the long rant.. Thanks again!

^^Yep. I get cold a lot more now then when I was heavy. When I was heavy, I was hot and sweaty. Congrats on the loss!!

Wow - awesome thread...makes me want to get motivated...but it's so tough to give up all the fatty foods I love so much. I could definitely stand to lose 30-40 pounds.....

Hey Warren.
I've known about your weight loss a bit after I joined AZine, and I too lost a bit of weight back when I joined, lost 50 lbs in the summer (in the span of 3 months), half being the horribly unhealthy way, and the other half fixing my way to a much healthier route (meal portions, water, exercising daily) and ended up from 190lbs to 140lbs. This was my after my graduation from high school.
Currently in my final year of college, I'm at 163lbs. So I've gained back 20 essentially within the past 4 years. I've done a pretty good job maintaining my weight anywhere from 145-155 for the first 3 years. Up until last year, my eating habits have gone to shit (eating out more) and exercising has gone to a minimum (if at all none if you exclude walking on UMD's massive campus) because of my studies, but in reality you could just say that I've become lazy and that I can't really blame my weight gain on my studies since most college students still have time to exercise. I've gotten a bit of my stomach back and I can feel some extra weight around my face which has gotten me feeling a bit self conscious and upset within the past few weeks. I plan on losing 20 lbs again after I graduate because I'll have much more time on my hands to exercise and I'll have much more motivation after not having any more coursework/exams/projects on my hands.
My question to you is, is there a way to still enjoy the food you eat and still lose weight? Perhaps by eating in smaller portions? Since I live at home, my mother feeds me generously with a large bowl of rice along with different dishes (ranging from meat to fish to vegetables) and both in the morning (around 11am) and at dinner time (around 6-7pm). I don't eat any junk food anymore (i.e fast foods) and haven't touched any of that in a long time. Also haven't had much urge for soda, but assuming that energy drinks are much worse, I've had a bit of those especially around midterm/final exam times. I mainly drink water though.
Also, is there a benefit to eating earlier in the day (in terms for dinner) rather than at 7-8pm? Back when I lost 50lbs, I demanded from my mother that I eat at 5pm, because I feared that meat and other food wouldn't digest as well at night than in the morning time.
Sorry for the long read, just need to shed some lbs off. Thanks!

College is a bitch for weight..Too much food available and not enough motivation to exercise.
Best advice I can give you is to eat what you like, smaller portion if possible and cut out known bad things off the bat. Soda, mayo, fried foods, donuts, bacon, etc. Get through school without gaining any more. Exercise. White rice is not that great, brown is better, but I know its not proper for you. Fish, chicken is good. Eat food with protein and nutrients compared to junk.
I heard both stories on whether its better to eat earlier or later. Most people seem to think that it doesn't matter, calories are calories no matter when you eat them. My take is this: If I can eat a latter dinner without snacking beforehand, I will do that. This way it kind of stops me from eating a lot after dinner.
Does this help?

Yeah, thanks Warren.
I'm going to try to transfer my dinner from 7pm to 5pm. I head to bed around 10-11pm and I found that when I eat around 7, I'm kind of full when head to bed and I figure I wake up feeling very uncomfortable and with still a big belly when I wake up. It seems it doesn't properly digest because I sleep too early.
I'm pretty serious on doing this, so I'll update with a new post in this section in a few months.

I would like to take the time and thank Whiskers for this thread.
I've read plenty of diet and weight loss articles on the internet, but none comes close to being as helpful as this one. This thread provides real life experience not from a medical point of view.
Whiskers is spot on when he says that motivation is the key to weight loss. You can make all the commitments or all the promises in the world. Nothing is better than motivation.
Fitday.com gives me motivation everyday because when I do an activity, I log it in. When I eat, I log it in. This is a great motivational tool because I become proud of myself when at the end of the day, I see that I only consumed 1300 cal. And according to Fitday.com, consuming 1300 per day for 4 weeks will allow me to lose 7 pounds.
I basically did what Whiskers advise, eat the same shit everyday. Slimfast for breakfast, healthy sandwhich for lunch, vegetable for snacks, and a light dinner. For the past two weeks I lost 4 pounds already, weighing in every morning after taking a piss.
Whiskers, you surprised the shit out of me with the before and after picture. Your life will now be 10 times better not only physically but mentally. I respect any person that turns their life around like that.

8/20/08 I was like 257, lowest weight I've gone .. I've shot right back up to 273. I think I need to get out of such a time-demanding school first before ever considering hitting the gym regularly. And the college diets ..

To Whiskers, or anybody that's had experience with this:
Have you found that eating at a set time every day helps at all, as opposed to eating at random times every day? For example, I'll have breakfast as soon as I wake up, usually between 6:30 and 7:30, but sometimes I'll eat at lunch at 11, or as late as 4, and then I may or may not eat dinner or a light snack.
Do you find that eating at set times as opposed to random times helps at all on its own?

Yea I agree. My meal time fluctuates throughout the week and it's not affecting anything. My focus is mainly on the caloric intake. I've even eat an hour before I go to bed due to my school schedule and I'm still losing/maintaining my weight.

Whiskers,
How hard do you think I should hammer the weights? This is what I am currently doing at least 5x a week
I am 42 5'6" and 225lbs (was at 240 when i started ).
I have been on my new routine for 3 weeks now and dropped 15lbs while increasing my strenght. My workout is 90 mins of the following at least 5 times a week
10 sets of 10 reps for each unless otherwise noted
tricept extensions (140lbs just moved up from 120 during last work out 2 sets 120, 6 sets 130 and the last 2 at 140 started with 60lbs)
arm curls 5 sets of 10 reps (60lbs). Goal here is 100lbs, 10 sets
seated ab crunch (150 lbs goal is 200lbs machine max started with 50lbs)
peck fly (100lbs goal is 200lbs or more)
seated dip 5 sets of 10 reps (120lbs goal is to max machine at 200)
seated row alternate bewtwen 115 and 130 lbs (plan on moving to 130 next week)
fixed lat pulldown (130lbs just increased it from 115lbs last workout up from 85)
pull down (130lbs up from 85)
steated row (115lbs up from 85)
back extensions (205lbs, up from 130)
inclned bench press (65lbs) goal here is 150 10 sets
Treadmill 10-30mins a day slowly working towards 30 mins at 4mph
10 laps in the pool at a leisurely pace
Some days I cannot go because the club either closes before I leave work or it is not open when I leave work

First off. Whiskers, you've heard it plenty, but honestly congratulations, and THANK YOU for the write up. i only read the first page, cause its 4am and i have other work to do, but i will read it on friday when i free up a bit, and will definitely use this as a spring board i may just use you as a motivational poster type thing. (wanna slack off, so did whiskers, he didn't, why should you).
im 19(just turned on the 24th), and i've been fluctuating at about 240 +-10 depending on how the weeks are going for several months. i'm fat, but not obese, i've been into sports for years and have been working out since right before freshman year of high school. but having recently switched from soccer to football then, i was thrown into heavy weight lifting, so i bulked up instead of toning up, and junior year after i couldn't play anymore due to a back injury, i realized that was the wrong thing to do. i switched my work out reluctantly to do more and more cardio and less lifting. i LOVED to lift. not body builder, but if i was around weights, i'd lift. i have bad knees and ankles from years of sports on a poorly trained body, so i mainly did the elliptical and occasional spinning(once a week or so). i love spinning, so many hot girls there, and its a sick workout. i was used to it from wrestling where my couch took me and a few teammates a few times, and turned the heat up to 100+ with no fan, and we had to do jumps and all that shit. i built up my cardio from hating doing a mile, to looking forward to running 3, then 5. i realized that my regular after school workouts weren't consistent enough, in the sense of it was too easy to make an excuse like i have homework to do, or friends to hang out with. i began a routine of 5am workouts at my gym. everyday i'd get up at like 4:45ish before school, get to the gym as the guy was opening it, change and get ready, and do the elliptical for an hour on varying resistance trying to keep speed constant. i still have photo's on my iphone, i averaged about 1000 calories on my 60 minute runs, doing between 5-6 miles with varying resistance. then i would go into the locker room, do sauna and steam room for upto 30 min, take a shower and get dressed for school, grab breakfast, and pick up my friend for school. class started at 7:46 and everyone was just like how in gods name are you so awake. i love and miss those early workouts. then summer hit and i still worked out but lost the regimen. i agree, college + losing weight is a horrible combo, but also, its a great time to do it, and the longer you wait, the harder it is. just think about the gym like 1 more class you gotta go to. no choice, you don't wanna fail. this will be my new mentality because most of the first semester, i barely hit the gym, and this semester as well. i haven't gained weight or lost much muscle, and i play volleyball for 2 hours atleast once or twice a week, but its definitely not enough. this weekend im going to start formulating a schedule, and i will keep shit updated in this thread. maybe i can get in contact with you whiskers and you'll be my long distance coach. i'll have to be as honest as possible with you, and you can try to help keep me on track. though really its gonna be on me, obviously.
PM me if your at all interested in helping out =) i'll post with an update friday-saturday either way

Dave, good stuff, it sounds like you know what you need to do. Like I said, focus on low impact cardio like the spinning until you reach a goal weight, then start bumping up the lifting. Ive seen too many people who just bulked up, but when they stop, it just turns into fat and they are big. Its easier to shape up when you are at the weight you want to be.
Personally I am doing ok, I need to drop about 15-20, which Im working on now. We can help each other out. Keep at it!

You can do it Whiskers! I don't think I ever chimed in before since I joined l after the thread kinda died down, but doing a lot of the same things, mostly eating better, avoiding sugar, and lots of walking, I dropped 65 lbs over the last 10 months, still have a ways to go. I had lost 80ish lbs in my late teens but after college packed on 100+. I hope you're doing well enough sticking with it, getting it off isn't the hardest part. I'm more determined now since I have a kid and I'm looking at it as a lifestyle change, not a diet.

Another quick tip - Brush your teeth....I find that a lot of times I want junk food or something sweet, its usually because you want to get the taste of the last meal out of your mouth. Brush your teeth instead, it cleans your mouth and generally you don't want to sugar up your teeth afterwards...
I will brush and floss around 1700 (5:00pm) to discourage and avoid eating anything else for the rest of the night.
Also, carry a travel bottle of mouthwash during the day. I'm required to walk near food vendors frequently. If I'm confronted with a hot, bubbly pizza or Starbucks is calling, I swig and rinse -- it works to kill the craving.
For hunger later in the evening, chug a liter of water.
