ways to avoid cramps when running

For the past couple weeks, when I am on the treadmill at gym, my calf muscles get cramped up after only a few minutes of jogging. I usually slow down to a walk for a bit, the cramp subsides, and I continue at my regularly scheduled pace.

Any ideas on what I can do to avoid the leg cramps?

1. Warm up before running...walk, bike, jog slowly, etc.
2. Stretch.
3. Make sure you aren't overtraining.

^ thats just to take your mind off the cramp. I'm pretty sure breathing has nothing to do with it.

Could be wrong though.

Cramps are due to lack of oxygen and/or salt and water. Deep breathing, some salt and water before exercising and stretching will go a long way to prevent this.

They are also due to dehydration. Make sure to drink plenty of water the night/moring before. Increase your potassium intake as well.

i used to have cramping issues running track a while back, it was because i was dehyrated or not hydrated enough. You should drink perhaps 16-24 oz of water, maybe Gatorade 2-3 hrs before you run. This should do the trick. This will give you enough fluids and time to remove this water content before you beginning running.

I know side cramps can be reversed by changing your breathing to exhaling on the oposite step. Their is some combination of stepping down, your diaphram contracting, and I believe your liver moving which can cause cramps. Heard it on some medical website.

Eat a banana 30 minutes before exercise. Bananas are full of potassium. I play basketball twice a week, 2 to 3 hours games and rarely do I pull a cramp.
