On the new Food Pyramid
The USDA recently unveiled a new food pyramid...
Pretty much everyone agrees: it's useless.
So Slate asked some designers for some alternative designs. Most came out equally useless, some pretty neat, all poke fun at the government...
I find the 5 Mile a Day Food Cycle hilarious.

That second to last one is hilarious.
And the new pyramid is horrible. The bueracrats just had to stick with the pyramid. You can tell they really wanted to make some changes but couldn't do enough.

This is a novel approach:
This addresses the real problem, "Nutritional Facts" on food are completely skewed.
You're told, ok, this has 60% of your allowed fat. Ok, that sounds reasonable. But it fails to remind you that you're probably going to eat another 3-4 times that day, and it doesn't take into account all the shit that the something is going along with.
There needs to be some sort of model for what is TOO MUCH for a single serving of food. If you figure the average person eats 4 times a day, and you're allowed 40 grams of fat, if something exceeds 10 grams it should have a big ass warning on it.

Adam: Sure, that's scientifically probably very logical. But like you said, completely unusable.
The food pyramid is still a pyramid because they've got children in mind. It's probably the easy thing to teach a child.
However, it's of no help to adults who actually need to make these decisions.
The key really lies in active awareness, people need to be told when they pick up that Soda that even thought that ONE bottle is only XX% of their daily allowance of carbohydrates, that combined with what you will probably eat in the day, that one soda will push you over your allowance by XX%.

I don't expect people to eat 6-7 times a day, but understanding the role carbs, proteins and fats play in health should be basic knowledge IMO. It doesn't have to be rocket science.
Personally, I think most people know what is good and bad for them and what is too much and what isn't. They just don't care enough about what the eat and have the balls to complain when they are out of shape. Some ice cream or a soda here and there is fine, but not day in/day out.
