MRI with Metal Inside Your Body

I'm scheduled for an MRI, but I don't think my doctor realizes that I have a titanium screw in my ankle and several dental implant from a motorcycle wreck.

Does metal inside your body matter with an MRI?

Yes, they'll be able to read your thoughts, now.

Orthopedic hardware such as spinal rods, joint replacements and plates for fractures are safe. Braces and dental fillings are safe as well. That is, they won't move or "fly out of your body." Keep in mind that the MRI will slightly heat these up and you may feel a warm or tingling sensation.

True story - I was assisting an insurance company with a business income loss claim for a healthcare facility that performed MRIs. They were shutdown for 9 days to repair their machine because a patient wore...wait for it...wait for it...lead-filled, 5-lb, ankle weights into the machine under his clothes. Idiot. Blew up the machine and had himself stuck to the top of the insides until they could get the power shut off.

Oh wow, I feel safer now that I see this sentence on Wikipedia... "Titanium and its alloys are safe from movement from the magnetic field."

All my crap are titanium implants.

Yep - about $100K just to repair the damage (not to mention the lost service revenue).

O.K. worried to death now. MRI completed at 2:30 PM. Home at 3:00PM. Hospital tech calls at 3:02PM and wants to know when I can come back. The radiologist saw something and wants more contrasting views of the thoracic section of the back.

They wanted me to come back today, but I can't get there until tomorrow. The tech said don't check in, just come straight back.

I'm going to have to start drinking now to get any sleep tonight.

Hang in there; if it makes you feel any better, I had an MRI related to my migraines and the initial reading suggested a follow-up CT to evaluate a "potentially tumorous abnormality." You can bet I was pretty freaked out about that. Anyway, had the CT done and there was nothing to worry about. My neurologist looked at the MRI and the note and was like - "Why did they say that?" Turns out whatever they saw was pretty common.
