It seems (at least where I am) there seems to be a little bit of a 'health kick' trend. I don't mean South Beach diet/Atkins and the like, but good ole fashioned exercise and low fat diets.
Anyone notice this at all where you are?
Just curious.

Yeah, the last I saw, the trend is still moving towards heavier Americans. But I live in San Diego where there are a LOT of people obsessed with their looks so I can't really tell here. If you are not in good shape, then you are out of contention as far as the meat market goes. I've seen more fake tits here than anywhere else, perhaps with exception of LA.

Seriously though, I've noticed the same fitness mentality since as long as I can remember. I choose to go along with it and exercise myself for my own purposes, because I'm disgusted with the amount of people with bad bodies in north america. They say things like, "You should like someone for what's on the inside, not the outside." and "I'm still healthy" and "Why aren't there more average looking people on TV and in porn?"
All of those are excuses for their laziness. They don't want to get off their out of shape asses and exercise! "I don't have time!" they complain. Well, make time. For those people who let work rule their lives by working more than 50 hours a week, cut back unless your children are starving. All this emphasis of getting ahead in the work world is causing people to neglect their ugly bodies. Personally, I would rather look good than be the person everyone looks up to at work. Also, a lot of these people get home from work and say "I'm too tired" and watch TV instead. Well, unless you have a physical labour job, you're not physically tired. Working out will clear the mind and make you feel MORE energetic after a long day's work. There needs to be more emphasis on getting proper sleep too. Anything less than 7 hours is unnacceptable.

The #1 way to live a longer life? Researchers say it is to eat less. The number 1 factor in longer lives for test rats was a reduced calorie diet (given all nutritional needs are met). But seriously reducing the calories of rats allowed them to live longer lives. The findings was that basically, each time you eat ANYTHING, there are residues left and the body wears down a little. The more you eat, the more it has to process and eventually, the body just breaks down. Each time your cells divide or process, a slight flaw is added to your cellular DNA and protein generating organelles. Eventually, some process falls apart and then you die. That's probably why every 100+ yo people you see are damn skinny. You never see a really fat 100 yo person. I think most fat old people kick the bucket around 70 because I don't see too many of them after that.

Younger people want to look better... Older folks tend to want to live longer... Whatever the reason may be, I hope it's not just a trend but something that people really take up for the rest of their lives. Good health shouldn't be a fad.

Well, quality of life during the old years is important to me. The people who smoke or are fat during their younger years don't seem to be too concerned with how miserable their lives will be when they are old. I see these wheezing old people or really fat old people on their little motor carts and wonder why they never did something to stop it from happening.
I ran a few marathons and one time met this old guy who had a T-shirt that said something like "50 Club" I asked him what that was and he said, it's a club of people who have run marathons in all 50 states. I thought that was amazing. He was like 70+ years old.
I'm not very happy that we Gen Yers, as a generation, have to pay for the unhealthy habits of the Baby Boomers in the coming years. And in the future, some future generation will have to pay for the Medicare and Medicaid for us. If people just watched their health, they'd be much happier and I wouldn't complain about having to pay for them AND my expensive $160 / mo health care insurance for single person!

Personally, I have seen it more and more. My in-laws, wife, mom and more co-workers are becoming aware of their health and doing things to get into shape or stay in shape (in the case of my wife - she is a size 4 but wants to do things to maintain that). I think hearing about how fat the US is gets on people's nerves, so they react. We need more awareness, like the Supersize Me movie. If more people watched that, maybe they would make better choices about what they ate. A co-worker of mine won't watch the movie because he is afriad it will make him stop eating fast food. My best bud watched it and now he does not eat fast food. Just 2 cases of how powerful this kind of media attention can have on people, even those who try hard to ignore it.

BTW, I think people also see how expensive health care is and are taking measures to control those costs - sometimes people have to get hit in the wallet to make changes in their lives.

I know, I pick on him ALL the time about it too. I am not sure if he eats as much fast food as he used to, but he is not the healthiest dude around. And he is not fat at all, which is the crazy part. Not that skinny implies being healthy.
