Guys: How often do you shampoo?

All my life I've been shampooing every day. In my family, baldness isn't in the genes. Sure, my father in his age is starting to get thin, but he has more hair in his head than I do. All his brothers have relatively full heads of hair. Both grandfathers have full heads of hair. My older brother and I are losing our hair pretty fast, though he is a bit worse than me.

I generally stick to one guy when cutting my hair. I've mentioned to him the Thought of getting hair implants because I just hate the way I look. I feel so much older than I am. Plus I've got quite a bit of salt and pepper too. Can't color my hair though, it's against my religion (seriously). As much as I want to buzz all the hair off, the wife will kill me if I do it. I cut my hair pretty short though, but not short enough where you see skin on the side. He says for my hair type, the implants won't be good because I leave my hair short on the sides, and where they would take the hair to implant from, the scar would be too noticeable. He also said that eventually the implanted hair will fall out and not grow back either.

Every so often I go to a different guy by my office when I can't get to my regular hair cut. The experience is similar, with the same old school technique as my regular, so the end result is the same. I went to my backup last week, and he was asking me about my family and baldness. I told him no one in my house is bald. He asked me how often I shampoo, I told him every day (sometimes twice, but rarely). He said that's my problem. I told him that my hair gets very oily and bothers me, which is why shampoo daily. He said that my head needs the oil to keep the hair from falling out and continuing to grow. I should only shampoo 2x a week max. I know women do this, but I thought for different reasons.

I asked my uncle, who I say I resemble the most how often he shampoo's, he said only 1 to 2x a week. Though he does put conditioner in his hair every day. Other than getting a little grey on the sides, he still has as full a head a hair as he did when he was 17. He's not much older than me either (my mothers brother, the youngest of 5, he's about 40).

So my question to you guys: how often do you shampoo?

I scanned the article and may have missed your ethnicity... I believe this is important as a white male I shampoo daily, but I understand some Spanish and Asians do not have to shampoo as often.

I honestly think that the barber is wrong, hair loss can be cause by stress, diet, iron deficiency, hyperthyroidism, etc.

I say you talk to a doctor and get a check up just to rule out something more serious.

Lastly, buy more than one shampoo (preferably thickening shampoos like these: http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/prod...kening-shampoo) , I keep 4-5 in my shower and use a different one each time I wash.

Hope some of that helps.

If I skip a day with the shampoo my hair feels gross. I can't stand it. I've pretty much done it every day since puberty.

I've got a nice bald spot coming in from the rear.

Some studies say that baldness is inherited from the maternal grandfather.

plus i have expensive shampoo that they coaxed me into buying at the salon, and the cheap shampoo from the grocery store. cheap shampoo most days, expensive shampoo for going out.

Depending on your hair type and ehtinicity, shampooing everyday can cause hair loss. Hair is weaker when its wet and the frequent shampooing can slowly loosen the follicle and cause them to fall out. Shampooing too frequently will also strip the natural oils from your hair and scalp causing you to lose even more hair.

As a mixed race person (black, white, and native american) I shampoo my hair 2-3 times a week. If I didnt have a dry scalp problem, it would be less than that. Maybe once or twice a week.

Daily x2 Morning and before bed. On average I go to bed after 1am and up by 8:30am, I shampoo both times. Just a habit to shampoo when I shower

Thanks for the replies so far...As for my ethnicity, I'm Caucasian/American.

I am Jewish too, and do wear a yarmulka on my head 99.9% of the time. If i'm not wearing one, I would put a hat on. I know plenty of people that wear it all the time and have plenty of hair too, so I can't say if that's a factor or not.

As for shampoo, I use this, but it doesn't seem to be doing squat for me:

I showered last night and took my uncle's advice of using conditioner on the days he doesn't shampoo, my hair doesn't feel too uncomfortable, so far so good. I'm going to try that for a while and see if it makes a difference.

Ed, I dunno... With our heritage, we shouldn't have any problems with hair, in fact we can donate, daily, lol.

Use either organic shampoo or some light shampoo that just removes the dirt with little promises as possible. I never keep in shampoo longer than 20 seconds on my head, I apply, I massage, I rinse thoroughly.

I've always had thin hair, and all those thickening shampoos are nonsense. If you truly want to get your hair back in shape, try this old remedy, Burdock Oil... You heat it up in hot water (the tube)...then apply and massage your scalp, wrap in towel or shower cap, let stay for 20 mins, rinse, use shampoo, rinse..

You can find it at any Russian pharmacy in Brooklyn.. in other words, ANY pharmacy in Brooklyn, lol

In Russian it's called репейное масло (repaino-e maslo)

I am losing mine. Reverse kippah. Both my grandfathers were bald, and my dad has very thin hair...

I tried the rogaine, but gave up. It's inevitable. Maybe I will just do the Jason Statham thing and shave it close...

I started going bald at 18, at 22 I shaved it bald because it was so embarrassing. I think it's genetic, however, I did throughly shampoo every day which may have caused me to go bald? I dunno, I had very think hair from 2-17 then it went kaputt.

Every time I shower since I was young. I'm white with some of the thickest hair you'll ever see, but I don't let it get longer than half an inch. No dandruff problems either

I shower/shampoo once a day, in the morning. I'll also shower/shampoo before I go out on a date with my girlfriend.

Every day before work because I have to look presentable for customers but I'll usually skip it on my days off because I'm lazy and don't give a shit. When my hair gets long, I get major-league bedhead and so shampooing is a necessity to get it to behave.

My dad's side has the bald gene but my mom's side has great, thick hair and I'm starting to think I might have gotten both. Maybe it's nothing or maybe because it's summer but I've been shedding a bit more lately when I wash. I have to admit, it's got me a bit nervous...I don't want to start losing it at 24 and shaving my head isn't an option. I've got a 21-stitch scar going straight across my scalp that I can't imagine it looks very good. I've never shaved my head so I've never actually seen it.

Everyday...it's too oily otherwise. I actually hate how it feels after a long day. With the exception of one year where I didn't cut my hair at all, I've been buzzing my hair for the last 13 years (currently #2 guard). Only hair I'm loosing is on the sides (temple area) due to sleeping on my side.

I don't shampoo (or condition) anymore. There are plenty sites about going shampoo free if you're interested. For the first couple of weeks your hair goes really oily, then too dry, while your skin is figuring out wth is going on, but after that, you're golden. Your skin naturally produces everything your hair needs to stay healthy, you've just got to let it. I suggest trying this the next time you cut your hair, as the adjustment period won't be as noticeable.

A shower isn't a shower without shampoo. I shampoo my hair at least once per day, and when I exercise (most days) it'll be twice.

My hair is still thick although it has turned white. I keep it cut short.

If you're balding, the best look is to shave it close unless you have a really weird shaped head.

Umm.. people must love you when you take public transportation. You read on some site that removing dirt, dust and poop that you have accumulated through your day is not ok? just rinse it off? Next time you finger protrudes through the toiler paper, just rinse it off and go on about your day.

Consider getting propecia or the generic version finasteride (sp?).

Hair loss is due to Testosterone being converted to DHT and these drugs prevent the conversion.

I shampoo and condition about twice a week. If I didnt go to the gym about 4-5 days a week and play soccer once a week it would be just once.
