I am feeling pretty good about this whole effort right now. I cheated a bit over the weekend but it isn't like I fell off the wagon or anything (I had some fries with my dinner Saturday).

I did a bit of investigation on the hockey thing. I play Sundays for 1.5 hours that burns an estimated 1200 calories for my weight!!! Crazy.

This fat is disappearing faster than I thought it would. It makes me wish I had taken before measurements.

Both my wife and I have started weighing our portions and counting out the nutritional value of our meals.

^ Hey, if you're happy, keep up the good work, but when I think of a 42yr old at 5'10" - 175lbs trying to lose weight, the visuals are concerning. How much do you plan on losing?

Variables and control.

you have your control - same amount of calories. 3000.
the only thing you're doing different is adding the cardio.

I agree every one is different, but the general practices remain the same.
to lose weight; expend more calories than you put in.
Time of day helps, especially with carbs. I try and get all of my junk out of the way earlier in the day and taper off. I hate cardio so I add it if I'm training for something specific like a sport, otherwise I do all of my cutting by diet and weights. I've settled at 1,000 a day right now. No cardio but I space my sets very close together, it's almost like hiit. This is where things start to taper off so I'm doing multiple sets at the same calories now. We're doing the biggest loser with weekly weigh ins and in these 3 weeks, I've done 6lbs, 5lbs, and 5lbs. I'm just about where I need to be already. I'm not a trainer so I can't give advice to anyone, only post about what works for me. Get the weight off quick and maintain from there.

Yeah, i hear you. I dont need to lose much. My plan is to lean out but not lose much weight. Trust me though - for being someone who 'looked' skinny i was kinda flabby. I carry a lot of fat in my trunk. I am excited to see that disappearing. After April, i will bring my calorie intake back up and focus on muscle building while staying lean.

Basically, I ate a lot of garbage. I came to the realization that I shouldn't eat what I was eating.

I just realized I keep using the term losing weight when really I am talking about losing fat.

What's the best diet for cutting weight and getting abs while drinking heavily 2-3 times a week, and moderately the remaining days of the week?

I like burritos, pizza, bacon, ice cream sandwiches, cookies, and the occasional bag of cheetos.

Pizza is the best balanced diet !
It has all 4 food groups - Bread, Diary, Meat, Vegi and contains Protein, Fat, Carbs. You can live off Pizza.
Thats Italain !!

I wouldn't even think about age when you're training, you'll only talk yourself out of following through. If it really bothers you, you can always get blood work done and talk to your doctor about testosterone therapy or GH if it's actually needed. It will completely level the playing field.

I can't stand long diets so I do it quickly. I'm 229 right now, currently consuming under 1,000 calories a day, and averaging almost 1lb a day loss. Just a little cardio and some weights but only 1 set of whatever muscle I'm doing. Not too healthy but not that unhealthy and it's over with in under a month. Also winning the Biggest Loser contest at work every week against our resident steroid freak and all of the obese people. I usually put on a little more muscle than I need so if I lose a little during these diets it's not going to matter much.

A very lean 175lbs is not a bad size for 5'10". This is one of my best friends who is also 5'10" and 175 is about the biggest he ever gets during the summer.

How the HELL did he pull that off in 1 month?!

The Beer-Pizza-Nachos diet is a goal we should never quit trying to achieve.

One day it won't be a big deal to be fit and eat like crap. It's the singularity. Nano-bots destroying crappy fat and cholesterol molecules upon consumption, for example, are only a decade or so away.

So... No abs yet. I don't expect to reach my goal but no worries. I am thrilled with my progress. Strength is up, inches are gone, core is stronger, back pain is gone (except for post workout stiffness).

I am well on my way to squatting weights that I have not done for 2 decades. I am eating better. As someone who loves to drink alcohol I have been pleasantly surprised that I do not miss it at all.

The abs are close and I think I might see them in the relatively near future. Just not this month.
