Changing Oil, B-1 warning?
Hey guys,
I've recently got the B-1 warning on my 2009 Acura TL (w/tech package), I've had the car about 3 months and I think its due for an oil change.
I have about 33K miles on it and was wondering, is it wise enough to bring the car into a Jiffy Lube for an oil change, or is the dealership the only way to go about it?
Also, I commute about 50 miles a day to work, do I need to get this done NOW? Or can I wait until next weekend?

I personally would never go to Jiffy Lube.
DIY, take it to the dealer, take it to a Honda dealer or any indy mechanic you trust.
I don't see any issue on waiting till next week.

The thing is, if I bring it to a dealer, its going to cost about $100, if i bring it to Jiffy Lube, I have my company 76 unocal card and its basically. I have about a week to decide so I'm not too worried.

Below is the break down... I've yet to have it come up without an A or a B + something else.
Maintenance Minder A:
Replace engine oil*
*: If the message "SERVICE DUE NOW" does not appear more than 12 months after the display is reset, change the engine oil every year.

Replace engine oil* and oil filter
Inspect front and rear brakes
Check parking brake adjustment
Inspect tie rod ends, steering gear box, and boots
Inspect suspension components
Inspect driveshaft boots
Inspect brake hoses and line (including ABS/VSA)
Inspect all fluid levels and condition of fluids
Inspect exhaust system#
Inspect fuel lines and connections#

Inspect valve clearance

Replace rear differential fluid
Driving in mountainous areas at very low vehicle speeds results in higher level of mechanical (shear) stress to fluid. This requires differential fluid changes more frequently than recommended by the Maintenance Minder. If you regularly drive your vehicle under these conditions, have the differential fluid changed at 7,500 miles (12,000 km), then every 15,000 miles (24,000 km).

EDIT- that's all you need i.e. oil change and rotation.

I see nothing wrong with Jiffy Lube. In fact, because they let you watch what they do, you can make sure all is well. You can't do that at most dealers. When I do go to Jiffy lube, I take my own oil and honda filter and WATCH what they do. I use Royal purple oil in all my cars and there was an instance where the dealer put their crap in my car.Happen to notice my oil was still in the trunk. I course I made them take it out and put mine in.

I never go to Jiffy Lube either. I have seen soooo many horror stories from stripping oil pan plugs to just leaving the old filter laying in the bottom of the pan cover.
It's either the dealer or you need to find a local shop you can take it to. The best reference is by word of mouth. Stay away from quick lube joints.

just dot it yourself.. if you can jack up a car and use a socket wrench, your able to do it..
its only 1 bolt and 1 cap. you may have to take out your wheel tho..
should be a 30 min job.

I believe they only take off 4 bucks. They do clean your windows and check fluids etc. I turn all the stuff down. I dont want them touching anything but changing the oil. Right now Im still using my dealer for labor as I have free oil changes for 4 years. My dealer knows how anal I am so they let me in the shop.
You can also check prices at merchant tire etc. You can see the work being done there too if that is important. I changed my own oil for a long time, but I make too much money and am too old to be fooling with that nasty job.

For OP: bring the car to a Honda dealer or local shop. I know it's an easy DIY job but for some (like me), it's not worth the time. From your posts I don't think you're familiar to car work (no offense) so let a mechanic deal with it.

buy your own oil and filter, take it to the dealer, they charge you like $20 for the labor to change your oil, and another $15-20 for the rotation. if you have them do the oil and rotation with their stuff, then it'll be about $60-70.
quite frankly you spent a boat load of money for your TL, and you cheapen it by taking it to jiffy lube? who knows what the hell they are putting back in your engine, but hey its your car, do whatever you want. just be forewarned.
i'm anal, and i'm not saying the dealer is perfect, but they see acuras ALL DAY LONG. they know your car. my cars have been serviced by my dealer for their entire life. yes i pay for that service, but i take comfort in knowing that they are taking care of my car appropriately (and my service dept knows i'm incredibly particular).

there was an article about jiffy lube purposely messing up customers cars just to tell them they have to replace it..
i believe there was a video on one of their locations where some parts were marked, and the reporter brought their "dummy" car there to get oil changed. all the parts that the mechanic said needed to be changed were new parts that was just installed a day ago.. and they got flammed for it.

Isn't this card accepted somewhere other than Jiffy Lube? I've got dozens of places I can take my repmobile on the fleet plan.

take it where ever you want....changing motor oil and filter is soo easy a caveman can do it...jiffy lube, walmart, valvoline, go where you want....dont listen to the people with the stories....
i change my own, but wouldnt hessitate to take it somewhere...

to blame but me. if you take your time, double check,
everything, you will enjoy it. if i feel like im not in a
hurry to get the job done, it always goes smooth.

It's a franchise.
Just like all franchises, there are good ones and there are bad ones.
I am lucky that I live in a small town with a "good" one, and I would not hesitate to go there for an oil change and rotation of tires.
The Acura dealership is also a franchise. :-) There are good ones, and there are bad ones!
The dealership where I bought my car is a good one, but they are an hour away to get there and an hour to get back, they are expensive, they require a much longer wait than going to the local Jiffy Lube, and you're going to get hit on by people who know you could afford that ZDX or RL...if they could just get you into one....

I understand that frame of mind and appreciate it.
An extra bonus when working on cars like ours is that you keep finding things that surprise you, little things that prove to you that you've done the right thing owning this particular car.

I can tell you what happens in the 3G TL and assume it's the same in 4G.
When you reach 10% estimate Oil Life, you should get a warning eveytime you start the car. Something like, "B1 Sevice Due Soon".
When you get to 5% the message changes to "B1 Service Due Now".
When you reach 0%, the message changes again to "B1 Service Past Due xxx Miles".
Normally within that time (from the "Due Soon" message to the "Past Due" message) you should have PLENTY of time to get the service done. Something on the order of 500 - 1000 mile; as much as month's advanced notification (depends on specific driving habits, naturally).
If you go a few hundred miles past your service interval, it won't hurt anything. But if you just keep putting it off and putting it off ....

does the TL know to reset the warning, or do you have to reset it manually?
i think im just gonna go to jiffy lube and take my chances, i'm not as rich as i used to considering i have a $550 / month car payment now lol....

i just changed mine last week. i had to check the manual to get the reset howto
start your car, or at least turn on the accessorie mode, the then push your
info steering wheel button, til you come to the oil life screen on the MID.
with the oil life percent showing, hold down the reset button until the meter
shows oil life 100%. i think it takes 10 seconds before it will reset? hope this helps!
