Rearview mirror leaking

This isn't happening to me, but currently on my girlfriend's Passat. Being curious if Acura had this problem, I tried a search on the TSX, but none found....yet. However, some TL guys have reported this issue and the remedy was to replace the auto-dimming mirror, but the part is a bit pricey. I'm posting on the General Discussion side to gain a wider audience, and although a search didn't yield a TSX, wondering if anybody here has experienced this, but didn't post it.

If we were a Passat forum, I might have a clue. But I'm guessing that the windshield gasket has gone bad, it's leaking water, and the water is "intruding" near the mirror (which in come cars has a channel up at the top for wiring).

Other than that, dunno what you hope to find here.

I'm sorry, gonna clarify. The fluid is leaking from the auto-dimming mirror due to a crack in the housing. It's this fluid inside the mirror that makes it dim, not a leak in the roof or lining that would allow outside liquid to come into the cabin.

I learned something. Had no idea it was fluid in there. I'll stop tapping it to adjust it, now.

Yeah, it's apparently corrosive too. There was a thread a while back where some guy said his exploded over night and splattered the juice all over his interior. It ate little holes all over the place.

I don't know about VW but apparently the supplier of the Acura mirrors will replace it for free if you send them evidence of the dead one. I'll see if I can find that thread with the info.

EDIT: Nevermind, you found it already.

It was a pretty common problem on 2G CL/TLs and owners with the defective mirrors could call the company that made them, magna donnelly, for a free replacement sent to their house inexchage for the defective one. most everyone that had a defective mirror had the dark oval in the mirror. Yes there has been 1-2 threads about the fluid leaking and being corrosive and 1 member said it caused health affects cause the fluid was baking in the sun and he was breathing it in.
as for the TSX, I have read no problems on this. There has also been no problems with the replacement mirrors. I believe the replacement and mirrors used on the new model acuras have a more solid core vs. a liquid core. therefore you no longer see threads about mirrors leaking and being defective.
I would call your VW dealer or even consult a VW thread to see if its a common problem with them. this is a acura thread, we dont know much about your VW.

It would appear Magna Donnelly stopped producing the liquid filled mirrors around '02 and now uses one that has some sort of crystalline matrix (I imagine it's something like an LCD display you'd see on a calculator). I have to wonder how much of the change over had to do with the toxic liquid used in the older versions. I wonder if they got sued or something.

I hope Magna Donnelly did improve on their design from 2002 and prior, otherwise our mirror replacement is
76400-SEC-A12 MIRROR ASSY., REARVIEW (DAY/NIGHT) TSX $329.08.
