Timing Belt 1996 2.5tl
Question, how easy is it to replace timing belt on a 1996 2.5tl.
Scenario: I was on the E way doing about 65-70mph when the car went out. Upon taking it to the shop they guy said it was the timing belt. Now I read on this forum somewhere that if the belt went out while driving it may have seriously damaged the motor. How true is this being that it's not an old school motor with a timing chain?
I talked with a friend who owns a shop who originally said that it sounded like the belt had went and that usually you replace the belt and water pump together as a set. I believe this is true based on the info I've seen on the forum.
Now, I have replaced a timing belt on a Mercury Villager which is transverse mounted so the 2.5 motor is inline which I figure should be slightly easier. Is this true? With air and hand tools what is the estimated shop time?
Any and all help would be appreciated.

The 2.5 TL TB is not terribly difficult, but no walk in the park either. Here's a thumbnail view. GET A Manual!
1) Remove cooling fans for access. Remove accessory belts. Release PS hose clamp which is also in the way.
2) Break crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer bolt and remove pulley (inspect closely for any defects or loosness between outer pulley and inner section). This can be difficult. I use a Honda restraint tool and 1/2" breaker bar jammed against drivers side frame to hold the engine, and 19-mm deep impact socket, 1/2"-breaker bar, and 3-ft cheater pipe over breaker bar to gain leverage. This works good. Air impact is an option only if you remove the radiator for horizontal access room. Not worth all the trouble.
3) Remove upper and lower TB covers
4) Replace TB, water pump, and idlers.
5) Reverse to close. Torque crankshaft pulley bolt to spec.
I suspect shop time will be 4-6 hrs. I took a complete day to do mine.
good luck

Three Wheelin'
This is an interference engine so if the belt snaps, you're in trouble.
A little off topic, but while surfing through the forums I noticed that you implied having a 4G TL and an 07 & 08 TSX in addition to the 1G TL. How many Acuras do you own??
