Noob here ; CL 2.2 '97

Hey there guys and gals.
New here, just purchased a 1997 White CL 2.2 with 126,000 miles on it from a friend for $1,400. Paint is overall well except on the back bumper, transmission was just changed and so were all the fluids.
My only concern and this was brought up to me before I purchased the car is that there is something that needs to be fixed. Still unclear on what it is, but from what he says, the rubber head gasket on the inside of the engine needs to be put in. In my own words, the rubber thing on the inside of the engine. The part he said was $20 but the labor at a local mechanic would cost me $150. Is that normal?
Either way, glad to be here. Going to fix this car up as nice as I can in the coming months.

A Head Gasket is probably going to cost you a bit more than 200 bucks if you have a shop do the work for you.

My bet, with your description, is that it is the Valve Cover Gasket that needs replacement, which is a pretty easy job and the gasket is fairly inexpensive.

I'm pretty bad at doing things like this, I would have to watch someone do it first. I have a friend that says he can do it, I will probably go with him to get the part today and have him work on it tomorrow. Fingers crossed tho, I am kind of scared to drive without replacing it first.

A bad valve cover gasket will cause oil to leak out and onto the motor and usually the exhaust. It's not the end of the world. Just make sure she stays topped off with oil until you replace it. And welcome!

I am supposed to go get the cover tomorrow and the silicone to keep it in place and my friend is going to fix it all up on Monday. my question is what should be a cap for me to drive? Also when I looked at the car and have driven the car, oil hasn't leaked and hasn't at all since the owner said that the cap was gone.

I'm not understanding what you're asking about when you say "cap". And make sure you clean the valve cover thoroughly, and if any of the bolts were over tightened and the cover looks sunk in, hammer those areas flat. Also-do not overdo the silicone. Use Honda Bond and use it sparingly.

good advice.

There is a youtube video of some guy doing his accord's valve cover gasket. Looks pretty easy, and you could probably do it fairly quickly by yourself with the right tools.

Gasket has been changed. Next is to deal with the ABS light that just turned on, which hopefully is not the whole system
