Very hard to tell, strange looking hit. Would think a stone would make a bullet hole like it does when one hits the windshield.

Yeah, that looks like some sort of a collision with an object other than a stone. Though, if it was a relatively large, e.g. 1"-2", flat rock, think slate/shale, I could see a potential for similar damage. Even then it still seems too straight and vertical based on the photo. Any signs of damage on your front bumper or quarter panel?

this seems to be the most probable cause, since it looks like an impact with a thin vertical object(edge of a shopping cart)
