Film SLR lens versus Digital SLR lens

Perhaps this is a stupid question...but here goes.

I'm going to be picking up a film Canon SLR (a family member no longer wants it).
The SLR is from the early 1980's. Apparently there are 2-3 lenses and a flash unit.

Question: I really have no need for a film camera, but I am interested in getting a digital SLR. Will the lenses for the film SLR fit a Canon digital SLR?

depends, but probably not if it's from the early 80s.

Unfortunately, the answer in your case is "probably not." Canon SLR's from the early 80's used the manual focus FD mount. The autofocus EF mount that is common among all current Canon SLRs was introduced in 1987. If you want to know for certain, get the model from your relative and check out the specs at the Canon Camera Museum site.

So I guess I am SOL with the old lenses since it appears Canon changed their lens mounts in the mid 1980's from FD to EF type.

^ correct. Apparently there is an adapter that can be used, but I'd just buy new EF lenses. From Wiki:

The flange focal distance of the FD mount is smaller than most other lens mounts, meaning that it is impossible to mount a FD lens onto most other cameras with an adapter and maintain the same focusing distance. Canon made an adapter containing corrective optics allowing its larger, more expensive FD telephoto lenses to be used on EOS bodies. This adapter functioned as a mild tele-converter, and could not be used on normal and wide-angle lenses. Canon produced this adapter to ease the initial cost of conversion for those with expensive collections of long FD telephoto lenses.

^^I had that camera for a number of years and really enjoyed it. You might consider keeping it just to mess around with. They don't make them like that anymore.

I donated my mid 80's FD lenses and camera to the local high school, they sure as hell can use them. Just a thought if you don't want it.

Yea, I have no intention of getting rid of it, I just thought perhaps I could use the lenses on a new digital Canon SLR.

I'm gonna play around with it. It should be fun.
