Would you date someone...

who had the same first name as your mom/sister/cousin/ex-girlfriend, etc? Preferably not ALL of those, but take your pick

I've talked to a lot of people who say it would be too awkward, that people would get the wrong impression if you dated a woman with the same first name as your mom, for instance. Me personally I think it's just a name, a lot of names are common and wouldn't it be a stupid idea to dump someone because of their name? It happened to me once, actually. It definitely seems idiotic.

Thoughts?

I have the same first name as my girlfriend's dad. She finds it funny, not awkward, though she doesn't bring it up much.

But then again that's his American name. He didn't move to the US until he was around high school aged.

I don't see any reason to discriminate because of a name; not only did I date girls with names the same as my immediate family members, I dated a girl who had the same name as her mom (hmmm, Mary Jr.?), and in my family my step-father and step-brother both had the same first name as I do (now this one was pretty messed up when the phone rang asking for one of the three of us).

So in my scenario if the girl called me "son" nobody would think it was odd? Still would feel odd.

Not sure what options to put. Suggestions? Can mods add a poll themselves?

Although I will admit one time when I was a dumb teenager I rejected a girl because her last name was similar to my first name (something similar to John -> Johnson) and I'm sure I wouldn't hear the end of "hur dur u shud take her last name if u get married!"

And also not your mom's age. And also doesn't have a son with your first name who shares your DNA and is you because then you're just dating your mom

Family members' names could be awkward, but what about your ex's name?

I guess the ex was part of the OP. I still said yes, but that one would be the hardest for me I think.

I agree with you - it's just a name, and it's silly to rule someone out just because of that.

Now if you want to talk about naming children, THAT is where we had the huge problem using a relative or ex. I was very fond of a girl's name that happened to be an ex (who my wife also knew). I didn't even bring it up for discussion.

But someone you meet? Shouldn't give it two thoughts.

I dated a girl who told me she was named after one of her dad's ex-girlfriends, before he met her mom. Mom didn't find out about it until years later

I don't think I ever have, but I wouldn't care.

Somewhat related: I was at a party a few weeks ago...one of my female friends brought one of her friends and I was making conversation to be nice because she didn't know anybody there (I was not hitting on her). Anyways, I mentioned that she had the same name as my Mom, and the look on her face made it seem like I had just drop kicked a puppy.

I asked what's wrong? She says "Oh, that's great, so I remind you of your Mom!?!?"

Me: wtf

Yeah I don't know if she was drunk and mis-understood or what. I thought to myself no wonder she's single.

How did you find out she was engaged?

Back in my dating days I found out I was dating a married woman when she invited me over to house and I met her two toddlers. Hmmm...; that happened not once but twice.

I met a girl on Bumble who had the same first and middle name of my sister.

She never met the family or anything but that would've been funny

I overheard a conversation she had with someone else. She was literally whispering her wedding plans to someone The woman she was talking to then blurted out "So did you hire a wedding planner for all of that?"

I'm curious what her attempted explanation was

She claimed she was separated and filing for divorce. Both true enough not to call her explanation a lie, but that didn't stop the future ex-husband from slashing my tires; this was 1990 and even back then Goodyear "Gatorbacks" weren't cheap.

The second simply claimed abandonment by her husband; he came out of the closet or some such.

My sister-in-law has the same first and last name as her husband's sister. The first name is spelled slightly different, but the same exact name. It's brought up every once in a while, but not too often.

I had 2 ex's whose sisters were named Christine and Kristin, so it made things confusing when someone said "Hey Chris"
