If I agreed that it was a direct result of my stupidity/laziness? I'd stop being stupid and lazy, because now I know what caused it.
The back of my iPod touch was pristine when I bought it. Now it has more swirls than a 10-year-old Honda. As it gets more and more damaged, you get more and more lazy. If it was prime once again, I'd actually spend the $30 on a cover to protect it. Not worth it now.

When it comes to buying things for other people, you really have to remove yourself from what ultimately happens to the gift.
You can and should take into account what they have done with the gift to determine what you will be getting them in the future. If I buy nice things for somebody and they don't take care of it, the next gift won't be as nice.
When you dabble with other people's property (even married "shared" property), you're bound to step on toes.

Be a man! Don't ask for permission or advise that you're going to do something.. just do it. Better to ask for forgiveness then permission.
