IMO, never ask for a # from someone other than the girl. I've tried and it ends up being stupid and ugly. If you don't have the balls to ask at the time or ask a friend to make sure you see that other person again then you are lost. Good luck. My parents wouldn't care if their daughter married a black guy, but that isn't very common.
That being said - my gf is Indian and I get to meet her parents for the first time tomorrow...her mom is cooking me dinner. Hopefully the engineer line will get me almost prime steak status...if that doesn't work, i'll just make something up
