Ring
Mainly.... The price.
You're kidding, right? Ok. Maybe not. The engagement is usuallly the one with the diamond. It's kind of a bribery gift to help the lady make a squicker decision. lol It's the one given with the proposal.
The wedding ring is just a band, usually. Both man and woman receive them. They are exchanged durring the ceramony.

Usually the wedding ring is much less expensive to purchase initially, and much more expensive in the long run, than the engagement ring.
Engagement ring is usually presented to the woman during the proposal. Usually, a second ring (wedding ring) is added to the same finger while the couple exchange vows. At that time, the man also receives a wedding ring. Either type of ring can look however the couple wants them to, but typically, an engagement ring will have a stone of some sort on prominent display. Bands can look any way you want - with stones, without, designs, patterns, etc. Note that not all couples bother with an engagement ring (some only want a wedding band), and I even know a few couples who either agreed not to get each other wedding bands, or who decided in the end not to wear them....but 95% of the time, it is the typical custom of engagement ring + wedding ring for women/wedding ring for men.

Depends on how much a couple spends.
One can pay $500 for a plain gold band (OK, those were based on gold prices a decade ago) for the bride and $5000 for a small diamond engagement ring or $60,000 for a larger engagement ring: the difference can thus be $4,500 or $59,500.
You can spend less or more, but the difference between the engagement and wedding ring prices is in multiples rather than fractions if a diamond is involved.

Actually, one of mine wasn't a diamond at all. It was a sapphire. The OP should know that sometimes neither of the rings are new or expensive. Sometimes they are family heirlooms and are passed from one generation to another.
I'm really curious to know how it is that the OP has never had experience with this information. It seems as though we all run across it somewhere along the line.
What exactly are you saying MW???? Lol... Don't forget now, I've had more than one....lol...

You spend what you can afford. Some people can afford A LOT!!!

OP....hopefully you're not getting married soon, because this falls under the category of "If you have to ask, then you should not be doing it."

One of my husband's friends didn't know about the typical custom either (again, not required by everyone's standards or expectations - but known among society in general). He was going to propose and didn't know anything about getting a ring until some of the guys asked about it.
Come on everyone, give a 21 year old a break....
You'll find that a lot of rings are sold as sets, so the wedding band is a match to the engagement ring. So look out for opportunities to get both that are made for each other. The engagement ring will be the main one so that's where you'll spend most of the $. They are both worn on the left hand - together on the same finger. If they are not a matching set, then a little effort is required to get a wedding band that blends well with the engagement ring. Typically, if you get an engagement ring seperately then once you are engaged, you go wedding ring shopping where she has the engagement ring to match it.
Don't listen to anyone about how much to spend (and ignore that "two month salary" garbage). My standard advice: spend enough so she knows you sacrificed for her, but not so much that you can't start a life together.
Also, know what she likes and get it. Don't guess or go with what you think. If she's one of those that wants to pick it out, pop the question and then go shopping - make an evening out of it.

I didn't know what it meant either, but I did notice that when I looked at the link there was an ad for a diamond ring over to the right....
You're probably right Louder. Sorry OP. If you are for real, I apologize for teasing and I wish you the best of luck.
