A friend and I were comparing our respective internet communities the other day, and hers is very weird, so I have to tell y'all about it. Hers is a chat thing kinda like the old Excite chat format, but everyone has these personal profiles similar to Myspace pages.

Anyway, this friend said that she and about 50 other people chat in this one place pretty regularly, and they're of all ages, races, and creeds, just like us. The difference is that they are all dating each other... ONLINE ONLY. As in, they are all mostly married to people who are not members of their chat thing, but they are all paired up with each other. She said that they have all sorts of sappy poetry and photos with these people chopped together in their profiles, talking about how much they love each other and all that, but they never meet in person.

She said one of her friends has been "dating" another guy online for FOUR YEARS!!!!! They both have kids and spouses, they live on opposite sides of the country, and they have no interest in ever meeting up; their "relationship" is strictly emotional.

Is it just me, or does this sound really weird?

Yeah that's weird but how far do they go?
I heard of this sort of thing, & the places I heard of go real far like post sexual pics & vids & share them back & forth. They send each other underwear & outfits to pose in, stuff like that.

 

I should give more detail... these people are all married, in their 30s-50s, with children. The option for "going out" doesn't exist. Many of them are in unfulfilling marriages, but that's not enough reason for them to get a divorce. In their opinions, at least.

I kind of assumed that from your first post...they can still get out - girls night out, guys night out. You know, spend time with friends. Of course, I don't understand not getting out of an unfulfilling marriage. I know, people have their reasons (and I know them, the motivation, etc...don't want to get into that one)...but you would think they could find something else to do than hang out in a chat room.

 

An emotional connection is worse than a physical connection, IMO. I would consider it cheating. wierd? not in this day and age. unusual? definitely (or hopefully).

Well, FWIW the reason she was telling me about it is that she used to belong to the group of friends till they all started pairing off this way and she found out that she was pretty much expected to find herself a "boyfriend", so she quit. She was telling me because she found it very weird, too.

And as for "they should have something better to do than chat..." Uh... No comment.
