Getting Married, Ring Question?

So I am proposing and i wondered if i did the right thing as far as rings go. I decided i would go with a .72 ideal cut diamond with good color but only marginally good clarity, it is set in 900 platinum and is round cut. It sparkles like hell because of the cut, but has a miniscule inclusion (only one). Thing is the girl i am seeing is not into finer things, she would not care at all if it was CZ Is this too small? Too large for a 100 LB girl? Or should i have gotten a .5 carat IF or F? Tell me i did the right thing! I see all these 2 carat diamonds in movies, but i think that is the movie world. What did you married guys buy?

Oh yeah, and she is pregnant so i didn't want to go out and spend like the normal 4-6 grand, this one was expensive enough.

.72 is smooth man, nice size. It's subtle, yet shows you care. Didn't you ever hear that size doesn't matter lol

j/p she'll appreciate whatever you get her man, and if she's truly not materialistic she'll appreciate it even more knowing you went out of your way to get her something. Best of luck with everything!

If you can post specs of the stone, I can tell you if it's good. Color, Clarity, Table, Depth, Pavilion, etc...

http://www.pricescope.com is an excellent resource.

IMHO, going with an IF or F stone is for investment purposes, not something you want someone wearing everyday. What's your budget?

If you can provide specifics, I can help.

There are much better ways to spend money than on shiny stones. I would never buy a 2 carat ring, and I wouldn't date a girl who put a lot of value into things like that. A decent sized ring for sentimental value is great, but f#$k spending tons of cash for a sparkly little rock. Take a trip around the world or something with the cash you save.

Well the calrity is I1 but the inclusion is VERY VERY SMALL, almost an SI2 or 3, the cut is ideal so the usual table 55% and depth (i can't remember) and the color is G, the carat of course is .72, and i believe it is 5.6mm x 3.7mm or somewhere therabouts. Thr thing that set it off for me is the platinum, she is an active girl and might scuff/dent low carat white gold and high carat white gold is coated with rhodium and that is like snake oil to me. The mount should handle a 1.25 CTW which i will get her when i finish law school and the baby is a little older.

Thanks for the link, and all the good words guys, you make me feel better about a big purchase. Pricescope lists these stones from 1300-1500 dollars and a platinum mount i think is usually around 350. So conservatively it is a 1600 dollar ring wholesale, it appraised at 2500 (jeweler replacement value) and i got it for much less than 1600 because it was worn for a bit, then the guy's girl broke up with him, he wanted to rid himself of the reminder and quickly. So i made out like Thanks again for the words of encouragement, truth be told i will care more about this than she will, so she will be happy either way, i am only 21 and of all my married friends this will definitely be the nicest ring, which is good because i knocked her up (doh)

Sounds like a nice stone. If you're careful, you can sometimes find a really nice I1 stones. BUT be careful.

Platinum is nice, but IMHO, it doesn't carry the premium it commands. It's very soft, likes to scratch easy. If the head is in platinum, consider getting a 6-prong head. Again, on a 4-prong head if you lose one prong, game over. The stone is gone. If you go 4 prong, get gold.

Good luck.

Plat. also dulls alot faster than gold, you may have to get it buffed at a jeweler to bring that its lusty finish once in a while. As mentioned, plat. is a pain to fix as far as cost is concerned. New shanks or prongs for that matter can be a pretty penny.

well i make final inspection tommorow if it doesn't pass the test then i am going with a .52 ct VS2 E color, with a little less depth, but we'll see how the inclusion stands up. I am also bringing my loupe to look for other imperfections.

VS2 E is an excellent stone in terms of color and clarity. Hard to beat a 55% table on the I1 stone, but you're getting a world better in terms of clarity. What's the color of the I1 stone?

And are any of these stones certified? GIA, EGL, AGS, etc?

Yeah like I said i don't even think she would care if there was a stone in there or not, but to me it matters a bit. Espescially when my stoopid coworkers that have been getting engaged lately are all buying rings that are 4,000 - 20,000 dollars, the christmas party would be kind of a joke for me if i bought anything less than 1/2, it sounds really shallow but hell this is a once in a lifetime buy, i'm not going crazy, but i can't come out feeling cheap. She won't know but i will.

The I1 is a G, so not bad, the I1 stone is not certified as far as i know but i can look for inscriptions with my loupe, the VS2 stone is nice, but it definitely won't have the cut, which determines most of the shimmer, and hey, let's face it, it's about the bling bling

Yeah, but two grades better in color can often mask a stone that isn't ideal cut. If you had the specs on both stones, I could help more.

55% table is great, but is it too deep? Crown angles? The VS2 stone may be worse off in the table department, but may have a better depth, crown and pavilion angles. You really need to look at just more than the table.

Regardless, it's ultimately what you like. I just don't want you paying too much for something.

Call the jeweler and get all the info. Better yet, if he can run a sarin report on both stones, that'd be ideal.

I just talked to the guy with the .72, here is the story, keep in mind i have not seen it yet, he bought it from a local jeweler and his girl refused it so it has never been worn. He works in insurance and he says he got about a 40 percent discount because of some deal his firm has, he has the reciept with something like 1900 retail and 1300 after his discount, he is going to sell the ring to me for like $350 bucks, i kinda feel like i am praying on his pain, but he suggested the price. I will of course have it checked out by my usual jeweler to ensure that the 4 C's are correct and that it is a real diamond though i should be able to tell with a loupe. I dunno, if i get the jewelers OK i think that i am making out like a bandit.

Not to hijack this thread, but make very very very very very sure that you are marrying her because you love her, she loves you, and not because she is expecting.
Ask yourself, deep down, would you marry her now if she was not with your child.
21 is so very very young to get married. The child does not mean anything for the relationship, as she can go postal on you at any time, and you would be far worse off on the receiving end of a divorce rather than as a supportive unmarried father.
Most marriages at that young of an age don't make it (mine included). You will get raked financially in a divorce. Single you are fine (just have child support).

That out of the way, the ring is mostly a symbol, the one you have sounds great!!
Best wishes for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

is it a solitaire or does it have side settings?

my mom's is .5 i think, and it's perfect. i have long skinny fingers and i wouldn't want anything bigger than .75, so i think you're right on.

i like the subtle look to an engagement ring. nothing too flashy, then it looks like you're just flaunting money, rather than flaunting your happiness.

It's a solitare and, to answer fast daddy car's question. I have given this a lot of thought over the last few weeks, and i would be lying if i told you that i could completely discount current circumstance in my decision, things like that baby and the fact that she doesn't have health insurance and i do, play a factor. It is also a factor that i don't hink that the kid deserves to have split up parents, or have to learn at age 4 two last names. But those things play small roles in my decision, the point is that i was alrady thinking about marraige before the pregnancy, just about 6 months down the road, so i am just putting the move on things a little. This girl is the one, i have known that for some time.
